Hi guys, some advice please 🙏

About to start building a new pc within the next month and had already 100% made my mind up on specs until today....

First off, I game at high fps at 1080p on a 240 hz screen and play mostly rocket leauge, some gta and a few other games

Current system is
12400
3060ti
32 gb ddr4 3200

The new system I settled on was going to be a 7800 x3d, paired with a 4070 super. Knowing that that cpu will most likely give me the solid fps that I'm searching for. I may finally bite the bullet and move to 1440p at some point during the new pcs lifespan.

But I'm starting to be pulled in the direction of the 7600x paired with a 4070ti or ti super.

My bugets tight, but either of those combos fall within it. Also I'm not soley building it for older games and want to be able to play anything for a good few years to comes. Any other suggestions or advice is welcomed. Thanks

Hey there,

This would be a great option and solid for high FPS and great graphics detail. Good choice, specially at 1080p. The 7800x3d is currently the gaming champ, in quite a lot of games right now. 1% lows are particularly good (these are an indication of how smooth your gaming will be.
But I'm starting to be pulled in the direction of the 7600x paired with a 4070ti or ti super.
Hmmm. I would say the 7600x wouldn't be a great choice. Your current CPU beats it some gaming, and IMO would be more of a side grade over what you have.

Depending on your motherboard, you could drop in a 14400/14500/14600k/14700k to gain quite a bit of CPU performance without a complete platform switch.

7800X3D is certainly more forward looking, but we will soon be seeing Ryzen 9000 parts up for review, so it may be worth waiting just a little bit.

4070 Super is decent 1440p card, especially at competitive settings. But plenty for a good 1440p 60+ FPS experience at very high/max settings in non-competitive titles.

I agree. Thanks for the answer 😀

I have a gigabyte b660m ds3h ddr4. What would be the best bang for buck with 14th gen. I know its not the best board but its served me well for almost 2 years.

If I was to upgrade to say a 14600 or 14700 and keep my mobo and ram, would I see a Hugh bump in performance with the new gpu obviously

Well, the board implicitly lists 150W on the larger CPUs, which are 253-320W rated.

14500 would probably be a good middle ground. Boosts to 5.1Ghz which is 600Mhz more than the 12400 will do on top of the increased core count and cache gains that Raptor Lake offers over Alder Lake. You could also go for the 14600K and just set a realistic power limit.

14700 is better still, but is getting up there in price, and its boost profile is probably more than your board can handle.

The single thread score is what you want to focus on for high FPS gaming.

Yes, you should see improvements in 1% lows and maximum average FPS with a faster CPU. The GPU will make a difference when you bump up the graphics settings. It really depends on the game and settings which component will be the limit.

14600k is looking very temping if I'm able to use my existing board which is a gigabyte b660m ds3h ddr4. With the new gpu would that be a good upgrade to the 12400

Hmmm. Not sure I'd get a 14th Gen. They run hot. But also, this limits you to further upgrade. I'd either go with Zen 4/AM5 (AM5 will get new CPU's for another year or two at least), or migrate to an Intel DDR 5 Arrow Lake system, which is just around the corner (3-5 months). Both give you more longevity.

Edit: The 14600k gives about a 30-35% increase in FPS alone over the 12400 with a high end graphics card. That's a very solid boost indeed from CPU alone.

AM5 is certainly the better future proofing option, but is quite the expense. CPU now, save a bit and wait for the 9000X3D chips.
True, but going Intel 14th gen seems like a waste to stick it with current system. Then have to go a whole new system including CPU either way next time around. I just feel putting money into a DDR4 system is a little waste.

I'm in a similar boat with my 5600x. Yes, it still pretty strong for what I do, but have noticed the CPU dropping off in more modern games. Same with the 3060ti. I play 1440p, and am happy right now. I was considering a 5700x3d/5800x3d to get some more legs, but with Zen 5 and Arrow lake around the corner, I think it's a waiting game. Same with GPU. I really need something that can handle it in most modern games, and have a little left in the tank. Am considering a 4070 Ti Super for next GPU.

Either way, I'd only suggest a CPU upgrade if at least 2 gen out (so 14th Gen might fit), but wouldn't suggest a CPU with no further upgrade options, which is mostly why I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm running a 12th gen CPU, and I will grab a 14th gen at some point, might actually start low balling on ebay. If cost is no object upgrading the platform is fine, but for 200ish dollars getting a massive IPC increase without having to do a full system build is awfully convenient.

Selling the 12400, board, and memory as a set is appealing though. Recoup some of the costs. New that would be around $280, so selling the bundle for $150-200 recoups the motherboard cost for AM5 just about.

You could probably sell a 12400 on its own for about $75, so the upgrade cost is only about $175 for a 14th gen chip. And you could save a little bit with 13th gen which is nearly identical in performance to 14th gen.

If you are ok with 1080p 240hz, the 4070 super is more than enough. 12gb VRAM is plenty for 1080p.

If you really plan on getting 1440p 240hz display, i would suggest you to save up and wait for RTX5080 by the end of this year.

You might as well do it in steps, get the 9800X3D first and then the RTX 5080.

The USB 4.0 support on X870 might be worth it over the B650 mobo.
