Hi,

I'm having a new system build around an AMD Athlon XP 1700+.
So far, I have chosen a Soltek SL75DRV2 as motherboard;
a NVidia GeForce2 MX400 64Mb as graphic card;
a Lite-On 24102B CD-RW;
and I'll be using an Iiyama 19" Vision Master monitor that I already own.

Could you please advise me as to which hardrive would suit this system best?
I'm looking at a 40Gb, reliable, quiet and fairly fast one (don't we all? lol).
I'm also on a fairly tight budget: £100 / $140.

I'll be using this system mainly for web design (using TextPad, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash 5, Corel Draw9, Corel Photopaint9, Apache/PHP/MySql), to surf the net, and I might play a few games on it too. :)

Thanks in advance,

I suggest the IBM 60GXP drives.

Go here and search fo rthe 60gxp. This place has a great price on them. As you can see, even a 60GB drive is very affordable.

These drives are fast, cool-running, quiet and reliable. I've gone through 3 of the 40s and 1 of the 60s, while building systems. No complaints.

Thanks, camieabz :)

I had so far selected the Western Digital Caviar WD400BB but this one beats it to the post I think;
It will definately go on my shortlist. ;)

I'm with camieabz! I've been running a 60GXP for sometime now and I love it, I can't hear a thing and it's got great performance and good price, although I'd go for 60gig, it's the best value at the minute

I'm not lazy, just actively inactive

I think the WD drive with 8mb buffer is the fastest IDE drive.

Thank you all very much for your suggestions!! :)

After having looked at a few reviews, and compared prices, speed, quietness,..., I've decided to go for the IBM GXP60. ;)

My next question would be:

Could you recommend a company to assemble my PC? :)
Preferably based in or around Essex / UK.

i am now on my second IBM 60GXP (40G), this isn't a "HARD DRIVE", it's a pussy,i only dropped it once and it died.

Although it has a lot of good ideas, beer doesn't know anything about computers!!!

I strongly suggest Maxtor, best product support out there plain and simple. Makes Ibm's Rma process look pathetic by comparison.

It's not what they tell you, its what they don't tell you!

fast in what...
if there is nothing to back up all that cache, then how can the drive be the fastest?
i dont know much about the wd with 8 megs of cache...but if they havent switched to 40 gigs per plater, then it isnt going to be that fast when it comes to sustained transfers.....
and cache makes the drive expensive!
just a thought. :wink:
