I keep reading that some mouse pads do better with laser or optics. I am not sure how to tell them apart. I am using a Logitech MX518, which I think is using optics. What are some good (maybe on the big side) mouse pads I should be looking at?

If you have a laser mouse you may need a pad with a flat, even surface that reflects the light properly. Special mouse pads are available. If you have a cheap optical mouse like I do, it will work on a natural wood desktop but it is not nearly as precise as a good laser on a flat, uniform surface.

Logitech says that mouse is optical and should work on a wide range of surfaces. It shouldnt need a special mouse pad, just a uniform surface.

The logitech spec page I linked specifically indicates that his model is designed to work almost any surface, even on glass.

SteelSeries QcK+ (any size if you prefer) works best with the Logitech Series, or Puretrak.

This mousepad I would suggest particularly for the MX518 is http://www.puretrak.com/products/item/6

Additionally, if you want mouse skates (increases smoothness by placing stickers in set places around the mouse to provide overall better traction), I'd look into purcashing these: http://www.frozencpu.com/search.html?mv_profile=keyword_search&mv_session_id=UdgBKj9S&searchspec=MX518

Hyperglide is the best there is.
