ok so i have an old socket 462 desktop that i picked up at a local swap meet for 20$. and seeing as how i already have an i7 gaming desktop, i figured id turn the old athlon XP machine into a file server for storage but i have a few questions.

#1 assuming i go for a 2tb HDD what brand would be best and what type of drive would be best for backing up and storing my files movies music etc.

#2 would i be best going with raid or no?

#3 the board only supports sata 1 so i will need a decent sata pci card with at least 6 sata ports

main purpose of this desktop will be to backup and store all the files i have on my main gaming pc to alleviate space as my main pc's hard drive is getting full and since i need the space i need to transfer the files to this new pc

thanks for the help

6 drives will be used 1 for the os the other for games and the rest for storage sadly this board wont boot or see any sata 2 or sata 3 drives. so unless the drive has a jumper to force sata 1 speeds i will need a pci sata card

SATA I, II, and III is generally backwards and forwards compatible.
If you need some PCI adapter card, I'd question whether it can actually boot from that. Doubtful.

i have an ide hard drive that i will use for my os but the motherboard only has sata 1 ports on it and none of the sata 2 or sata 3 drives i have tried using on the board as storage drives are being detected hance why i need a pci card to be able to get the pc to see the bare drives for file storage
