Need help choosing core 2 duo /quad, i3, i5 for laptop.

Okay long story short. Choosing a laptop that will not out date itself in 5 years, is compatible with all programs, systems (can't decide if win 7 or back to xp), can watch hd movies and just basic surfing. I already have c2d and sometimes it lags (maybe the insufficent ram) so looking for a bit of an upgrade.

i3 & i5 are new tech but I thought cord 2 duo is better than duo core??? And so isn't i3 and i5 going back in tech??? And if you suggest 13/ i5 's which shoud i get - 520 or 750?? or just simply the core 2 quad?? The price is almost the same as i7.. Any suggestions??

I have my eyes set on the Samsung r580.

Any help would be great!

After reading the CPU buying guide I think i7 is a bit an over kill.

The 520m or 540m would be perfect. Any of the i5s really would do ya for a few years. I have an old pentium 4 2.2ghz laptop that still holds its own, granted I dont use it for gaming anymore but if you are that different. I'd say get a decent dual core processor decent (dedicated ram) GPU and you should be ok, the rest you can upgrade, bear in mind the i3/5/7 family all have faster ram (ddr3 that's directly connected to the processor). So I'd recommend going for that and again I agree with Invalid-Input, i7 is overkill, if you're going to do that ya might as well get a desktop really, it's like putting a ferrari engine in a mini. Get a laptop for portability, otherwise gaming on an i7 on a laptop is a waste of money and it'll probably burn out rather than last 5 years, but thats my opinion.

Oh and the Samsung R580 looks good, again if you've the money go with the i5 rather than the i3, and the nVidia GeForce GT 330M rather than the 310M if you want it for games, but go with the other options to save money and battery

Thanks for the suggestions. OOOps didn't know i7 is for desktops.
What other options would you recommend besides the Samsung? I didn't know Samsung made computers until I was in the market for one. So there really isn't much feedback about Samsung laptops. Other brands that are easily accessable to me is Asus, HP, Toshiba and Sony. any better suggestion?
