Hi,

I want to buy Dell T-7910 workstation & need technical help.

(1) I was using 3 ATI FirePro 2460 512 MB DDR3 low profile cards in my old Dell T-7500 workstation with 2 of them in PCIe Gen 2, 16x slots & one in a slot wired at speed of x8 with no problem. But new T-7910 has two PCIe Gen 3, 16x slots & one wired at speed of x4. So would speed of x4 work instead of old x8 & PCIe Gen 3 instead of PCIe Gen 2 ?

(2) I want to get an extra ATI FirePro 2460 512 MB as a back up but now new ones are ATI FirePro 2460 512 MB DDR5 instead of DDR3 & made by Sapphire. Would it be compatible with 2 old ones when all 3 are installed together ?

(3) For extra $50.00 I am getting ATI FirePro W4100 2 GB with new machine. Can I use it along with 2 old FirePro 2460 512 MB making a total of 3 GPUs ? How about drivers for them ?

(4) My old T-7500 which had Xeon E5645 2.4 GHz & worked great but for new T-7910 I am going for Xeon E5 2603 V3, 1.7 GHz for price reasons. Is that good enough ?

(5) My Old one had 12 GB DDR3 & never used more than 8 GB so for new one I am going for 8 GB DDR4 2133 MHz. Is that good enough ?

I would really appreciate any help.

Thank You

2| They should be fine provided the specs on the cards are the same/identical.

3| If you must migrate to the W4100, that would be better than what you are running, seeing how it's higher in the hierarchy when compared to the 2460. Though I must ask, do you run multiple displays with teh 2460 setups or do you also have them doing professional rendering duties?

4| See if you can get a higher end Clock speed wise Xeon although it's better than the previous Xeon you had.

5| Before we say yes or no, what sort of duties do you do with the workstation? I'm someone who uses about 8GB of ram but have been seen to work with 16GB's of ram on any given day. Workstation system's (depending n what work they do) will consume a lot of ram.

Thank you Lutfij. Here are answers to your questions :

With my old T-7500 workstation I was running 12 Monitors for stock market charts with 3 Low profile ATI FirePro 2460 each running Four 24 inch monitors.

It was doing great with 12 GB DDR3 & Xeon E5645 2.4 GHz & never saw it using more than 8 GB with 12 Charts + Video + 2-3 Word Docs + 3-4 websites open. No gaming though & won't be using gaming at all in new machine either.

Would this help or have more questions. I will be happy to answer.
