I'm getting ready to build my first system (a gaming rig), and am trying to decide on what CD-ROM/DVD drive to get. Since this system will be mostly for gaming, I want the drive to have a fast CD-ROM read speed, but I also want one that can read and burn DVDs incase I ever want to do anything with them. I'm probably going to be doing most of my shopping on Newegg.com and have found a couple drives there that I am interested in. All of the ones that I have found that read and burn DVDs have a CD-ROM read speed of 40x, but the ones that are only for CD-ROMs have a read speed of 52x. I was wondering if the speed difference would be visible when playing games, and if it is, if there is a good drive that combines the 52x read speed with DVD burning and reading. Thanks in advance! :)

There is a small performance increase over 40x and 52x. Not much, the only time you'll reach those speeds is when its reading on the outside track of the cd. You wont even notice the difference. Why don't you buy a last generation DVD burner (8x speed) and a cheap CD/DVD combo drive, one that can read dvds at 16x and cds at 52x. DVD burning at 12x has a small advantage comparded to 4x to 8x. This way you can have one Drive just for games, music and videos and another for burning. Plus it will be easier to make back-ups.

Difference between 40x and 52x is practically ignorable.

Get a DVD burner like LiteOn SOHW-812S. It's a great reader and burner (for both CD/DVD)
