I'm helping a friend build a new computer, but am not sure what GPU to use. He's taking my 3440 x 1440 100hz display, since I upgraded to a 4k.

He mostly plays games like Witcher 2, AC Odyssey and Origins, BF 5.

Would a 2070 be a good choice? I don't know if he can go to a 2080.

It's going to be matched with a 9600k

Any help would be appreciated

Does he have the budget for the 2070 Super? If so that's the card I'd get for that resolution/refresh rate.
I looked at Supers, but they were not far off from 2080 pricing. There was only $30 difference ebtween the 2070 super and the 2080 on the Gigabyte card. And from what I could find, they were only 3-5 FPS different than the 2070.

I think he was trying to spend around $500 on a GPU

Buying in the US?

If so I still think the 2070S would be a good buy at $500 whereas the 2080's are around $600 starting.

I've looked on Amazon, Newegg and even EVGA's website. The cheapest 2070 Super I can find is $650. He can get the 2080 FTW3 for $700.
If it were me I'd wait for the 2070S to come back into stock with Nvidia, I couldn't justify spending $200 more for 10 FPS (at the most) increase.

MSI Ventis 2070S for $510.

B&H is a reputable site, I've bought a few parts through them with no issues.
