I've been having some computer trouble, and I request some help to find out the cause of the problem.
I built this computer about a year ago. I since moved away from the location of the store I bought the components (old work place), so going back for warranty is quite a long trip. I've got a Corsair CX750 PSU and an ASUS Z87-K motherboard.
Every since I started using this computer, my computer turned on at night. With no exception, every morning I wake up, my computer is sitting at a bios screen. I go through some menus, boot normally, the time is always screwed up so I have to click a button to synchronize my clock.
However, I was lazy, didn't want to go back to the store, and left it at that. The computer worked, that was enough. I rewired some things to make sure and checked some BIOS settings but it didn't help.
A couple of months ago, I pressed the power button of my computer shortly after turning it off, and nothing went on. I dabbled with some stuff, but no matter what I tried, if I push my power button the PSU's fans did not turn on. The green light on my motherboard was burning.
I returned to the store with my PSU, and when he plugged in a generic PSU tester it turned on. I took my old PSU and a potential replacement back to my place, tried to install my old one, and to my astonishment everything worked again. Mostly angry at the situation and glad my computer was working again, I returned the replacement PSU. Everything went back to normal, including the nightly boot of my computer.
Last night it happened again. Shortly after turning off my PC, my PSU wouldn't start after I pressed the power button. Thinking maybe my power button was defect, I tried to manually turn it on by directly manipulating the power switch on the motherboard and took some cables in and out, but nothing helped. Eventually I jump-started my PSU by connecting the 16th and 17th pin of my motherboard connector. It went on, and after I turned everything off, I reconnected everything, and my computer went on as normal when I pushed the power button.
My question is the following. Is this a PSU problem or a motherboard problem? I'd like to make sure before I get warranty replacements and start testing, as the only way to find out the symptoms is to turn off my computer and wait a night. While everything is related to the PSU, it could be that my motherboard does not correctly pass through my power button or shorts out at night, causing a nightly boot.
Thanks in advance.
