My PC is hard crashing, no bsod, just black screen and I have to force a shutdown. Sound continues to play if youtube was running, but not if I was playing a game. It crashes within about 30 seconds of playing fallout 4, and at seemingly random times apart from that. Since fallout crashes it consistently, I checked gpu temperatures, but no temperatures got particularly high immediately before the crash. Anyone know if this information points to a particular failure, or am I up shit creek?

Edit: Tried a different PSU, no change. Tried running tests from OCCT.The CPU & GPU test were fine, but the PSU test crashed the PC almost immediately.

A few pointers here, just because your Gpu temps seem ok, it is sometimes not the case as to why the card black screens or the video driver stops responding causing the system to lock up in some cases.

The VRM`s on the graphics card also get extremely hot.
So it`s always advised if the dimensions of your case are small, with little depth to the case as well as height, that if the case provides fitting of extra case fans to fit some to increase air flow.

I`m saying this because you have stated the system crashes when trying to play a game, but also at random times when the system is not, for example it may freeze at windows desktop, much the same.
Reading into it, it point`s to your power supply in my mind as the lead problem.
Everything in the system depends on it, it`s the heart of any system and the root point to start from with symptoms like you are explaining.

The other reason can be down to your power supply, based on a few things. it`s wattage, and it`s amp rating of the 12v power rails.

If the power supply unit is a year or more old, or even older in the system it slowly degrades.
And you begin to get symptoms like you are seeing if the case.

The amount of power the PSU can give out begins to fluctuate randomly.
You first notice it under situations where heavy load is applied to the PSU such as running a game.
Locking becomes more frequent.when trying to play a game where more power is required from the PSU to drive the GPU.

As it progresses the system then starts to lock up and freeze when little load is put on it such as when it`s sat in windows doing very little.

My advice is to find a good friend who is willing to lend you a power supply that they have so you can test the system with it to confirm the PSU is the problem, if the current power supply you have in your system is over two years or more old.

How reliable a power supply is, and how long it lasts is also based on it`s brand name.
If it`s not a good well known brand name, and was in the £30 to £40 price range then it is even more likely the cause of all your problems if a few years old.
