Hello everyone. I need to build my grandfather a system that is powerful enough to run a virtual machine running windows xp. I need help with choosing a cpu. I'm thinking a ryzen 5 1600. If you guys could possibly suggest a lower budget option. All opinions are appreciated

To run an XP VM takes basically nothing except enough RAM. A single core of even a Ryzen 1200 would be adequate. Two cores to the VM if you feel generous. Really the big thing performance wise when running VM's at home is having the virtual disk stored and launching from a separate spindle (disk drive) from the main OS (Hypervisor).

When you create a Virtual machine (such as an XP virtual machine) part of the process is to create storage for it (a virtual disk drive). While you chose a nice SSD for your build, Virtual drives can and do take a lot of space you can't use on the primary OS (hypervisor). It's normal to have a regular normal hard disk drive for such chores such that the VM is never in contention with the hypervisor (primary OS) for disk resources.

I'll do a built in a minute, I'm also in Canada.

Just add an SSD and a second 4 Gig stick of RAM.

Change of plans, gonna give my dads computer to my grandfather and get my dad a more powerfull settup so he can do work. He needs something that can run a windows 10 virtual machine, and a couple other things, a pretty spiffy computer.

Cool are you in Ontario?

Do i really need a graphics card? Why not just use built-in dvi port of mobo.

Here's what i came up with:

Again, thanks a lot for the help.

Because Ryzen CPU's have no video component (GPU) the port on the board is for using AM4 APU's and right now they suck so bad I can't recommend them. You can also do an intel build if you don't want to buy a video card.

That build you made also lacks a video card. The Ryzen 1600 is more than you need, but it's a nice CPU.

Yeah I'm in Ontario, rural area.
