Let me briefly explain my current situation,I have 50 mbps package from my ISP. I am getting full speed on my computer which is through LAN cable. The problem is that the wireless speed is terrible that it can go from 1mbps to 30 mbps. The router is set up less than 5 meter away. I do have a secondary router which i make it to extend the wireless range downstairs. The reason i do this because I have a laptop that cant connect to the router which located on the second floor. The laptop is now connect through LAN cable from the 2nd router as wireless speed is just too slow from the secondary router. I know i messed up the set up for my house networking. Hope someone can guide me through this and teach me the way to set up the networking properly.

Is the upstairs router (we'll call it the AP) connected LAN port to LAN port to the main router? Is DHCP turned off on the AP and does the AP have a static address that is in the network range but outside the main router DHCP assignable range?

Now are the main router and AP set to use different non-overlapping 2.4GHz channels (selecting from 1, 6, and 11)?

I would also give the AP a different SSID than the main router because devices choose the radio to connect to and do not always make the right choice, but instead may choose the weaker signal. By using a different SSID you control what radio to use.
