I have DSL for my desktop in my living room. I want to hard-wire the phone line in my bedroom to an internet radio (I have an Ethernet-USB adaptor on order, and an extra DSL filter handy). Can I configure a modem in my living room, unplug it and hook it up sans computer for internet radio traffic in my bedroom?

Solution
You always need a DSL modem between the phone jack and your ethernet device. That's what turns the raw phone line into an ethernet network! Now whether you want to connect an internet radio w/ ethernet port, or desktop, or whatever, directly to that modem is up to you. Most ppl don't because their ISP only gives them ONE public IP and therefore also need a router to share it w/ multiple devices. But I suppose it could be done if you paid your ISP to add a second public IP. But again, you still need a DSL modem between the phone jack and any ethernet based device.

Perhaps powerline might be a better option. Using powerline adapters, you could patch one to your router, the other in your bedroom, then run ethernet to your internet...

-Thanks, eibgrad. I'm trying to keep this hard-wired and don't have a router, but it's looking like I'll have to install one to do this. From what you've said, if I put a modem in the bedroom to hook to my radio, I will need a 2nd IP address which ATT DSL does not provide (for my price). I'll look into Powerline (IDK), or I may have to go wireless.

Remember, you always need a dsl modem to convert the raw phone line into ethernet. That's the basic starting point for any ethernet network into your home. Once you have that, then you can decide whether to connect a wired ethernet device directly to the modem (which means you can ONLY have one device), OR, install a router and share it w/ MANY ethernet devices. That's why 99.9% of ppl install a router, to share the one public IP made available to you by the ISP over that modem.

At that point you can decide whether you want to EXTEND your wired ethernet network to include other access methods, such as wireless, powerline, or even coaxial (aka MoCA). These are essentially bridging technologies that leverage other mediums besides wired ethernet back to the router.

Using powerline, you’ll plug one powerline adapter into an AC outlet near the router and patch them together over an ethernet cable, then plug the other powerline adapter into an AC outlet near your internet radio and patch them together over an ethernet cable. All you’re doing is using your home wiring as an ethernet network between your device and the router.

I've looked into Powerline and due to security issues and the fact that I'd still need another modem, I may as well just go with a wireless router. I wanted to avoid stability and security problems with the wireless venue, but oh well.

Thanks very much for your time and expertise!
