Need Help Identifying a potential issue

Hello everyone,

I just encountered a rather odd issue with my desktop, about an hour ago upon arriving home and booting up my pc i encountered an issue where my system fails to load properly and gets stuck in a black screen with only the cursor visible. I did a hard reset and the same thing happens then on the third try i entered safe mode with network enabled and did a google search and found several suggested solutions to fixing the problem and tried them in the following order:
Spam Shift = Did not Work
Ctr + Alt + Delete = Did not Work
Entered Safe mode and did a system restore = System Restore was successful but Did not Work
Re-seat cmos battery/ram/gpu = Did not Work
Kick the PC = Applied self control

I was just about to give up...i booted the pc again and got into the same black screen with only the cursor and took a picture so that i could post a thread about it here but lo and behold it successfully loaded windows and i got back in, checked to see if anything was out of the ordinary but nothing! everything is running as it should be, no slow down or anything my games are all running as usual...

As happy as i am though i'm now scared to shutdown or even restart the pc, with all that said can someone cue in to what just happened? surely i'm missing something and my gut feeling is telling me something is still wrong.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit Service pack 1 with the latest update.

Do a disk scan for errors with Seatools, run a check for corrupt files with the "sfc /scannow" command at a DOS prompt.
