So I usually record my gameplay with obs, and it works fantastic. But I do notice some fps drop and stutters on games. Is there anyway around this? I'm open to try other recording methods besides programs like obs, fraps, shadowplay etc. I understand that using recording programs are really taxing on my computer, so any other alternatives? I seen some post about using an HAUPPAUGE HD PVR, or an Elgato to take away the taxing that recording does on my pc. Also, should I get another HardDrive just for my recordings? Thanks :)

Write speed of the drive that writes the capture file makes a fairly big difference on performance while recording gameplay. DxTory is the only capture tool I know of that can utilize multiple drives to write the capture file simultaneously. They call it Distribution Writing. You assign each drive as a capture drive, and select RawCap as output format, and it simultaneously writes RawCap files to each assigned drive. You then use it's built in RawCapConvert tool to merge all the RawCap files into one AVI file. To use this mode you also need to use the DxTory codec, which unfortunately writes huge files.

I've seen some say however that using an external HDD, especially something like a fast USB 3 one, can also improve performance...

That said, ShadowPlay is one of the most performance efficient tools, since it uses the H264 architecture in the GPU instead of separate software to do the capturing. Thus I have to think that if you got bad performance even with it, the problem might be weak hardware, or settings in the game or ShadowPlay you're using.

So you may want to consider trying ShadowPlay again, or for the first time if you've not tried it.
