I have a gtx 970 card that I'm installing however I'm all good to go but I'm having trouble with the power supply. I have a XFX Core Edition 550W fully wired edition. I'm having trouble find out whigh power cable to use there are 12 pins on the card. I have a 8 pin and then 1 6 pin and a 6 pin + 2 labeled pci-e that 8 pin. Which should I use. The first time, I used the 6 pin and the 6 +2 pin but didn't plug inot the extra 2.

Booted up and it gave me "power down plug in the pci-e the start up" message. Please help

The card uses a 6 pin and an 8 pin. There actually is no such thing as an 8 pin plug coming out of a PSU. They are all these 6+2 pins that allow you to peel back the 2 for just a 6 pin plug.

An adapter is a workaround. You don't need a workaround, all your connections are there. This is standard stuff here. Nearly ALL PSU's come with a pair of 6+2 plugs, or a 6 pin and a 6+2.

Here are the connections from your own link:

20+4-pin ATX connector (550mm): 1
4+4-pin ATX12V/EPS12V (550mm): 1
8-pin ATX12V/EPS12V (550mm): 1
6-pin PCIe (570mm) : 1
6+2-pin PCIe (600mm): 1

So use PCI 6+2? I used the one of the adapters that came with card. So now the cup boots up with card but very slowly. I haven't installed the drivers yet. Is the card drawing to much power? Also if I use the power cable labeled pci-e I should plug one part which is the six and the other with is like only a single plug with 2 socket connections leaving four open socket connection?

Sorry I'm still learning

I don't really understand what you mean, you need to use the correct amount of pins on the connectors, you can use a 6+2 (without the 2) and a 6 pin.

You should have a pair of 6+2 connectors labelled "PCIe". Use those, never use an adapter, especially since your PSU fully supports the type of connection you need.

The 6+2 will go in the 8 pin plug on the card, then you peel back the 2 on the other one for the 6 pin connection.

I only see one of these. cables. There is an eight that won't fit and a six. Why shouldn't I use an adapter

Why won't the 8 pin fit? Does it look like the photo, minus the split off pair?

There is no eight plug pin just two 6's

I couldn't do that if I plugged in both the 6 and the 6+2 (leaving the 2 hanging off) I would turn on my computer it would then say plug in the PCI-e then turn on the computer. Which is why I used the adapter. Is there any reason why I shouldn't use an adapter?

Solution

Ok I'll go back and give a try again. maybe my connection wasn't solid. Right now I'm using the work around which bothers me because my cable management looked awesome. But I'm a experiencing slow down with my internet now. the power supply is a Pro550W and the card EVGA GTX 970. originally the card I had in there was a XFX R7800. You think my bootup and Internet is slow because of the the new card drawing more power?

Gonna update my drivers see what happens. Gonna open my rig tomorrow and plugging the sockets with out an adapter

Ok took out the adapter connection and place in the PCI-E cable (Made sure I had a good connection :) ) booted it up got power! Internet connect has returned back to great speed it was at. All good. Hey thanks 17 seconds. Sorry for endless questions.

Thanks everybody!!!:bounce:
