had Windows 7 on my previous PC (probably OEM) and I did the free upgrade to Windows 10. The motherboard is defective, however, so I'm going to be installing a new motherboard and CPU but keeping the same hard drive. Do I have to wipe my hard drive first? How do I transfer my Windows 10 to the new motherboard, or do I just have to buy it this time?

a few months ago another had the same problem and had to contact MS support. explaining to them the situation lead to their old setup being deactivated & new setup being activated through the Microsoft user account they used.

i always do a fresh install when moving to a new motherboard to avoid any old driver conflicts.
