Need Help mATX motherboard

Im looking at gettting an msi motherboard to replace my oem hp motherboard. i have a corsair 650w psu, 8 gb ram, gtx 580 the cpu is a 1045t, which is the reason im buying the motherboard, as i want to oc the cpu. Do I need on board video chipset??? Can you recommend a good board?

No, you don't need on board graphics since you have the GTX580, however there is a good chance you end up with a board that does have onboard graphics but that doens't affect anything.

Anyways, I'd suggest this - heh, I'm no better myself since I linked a FM1 board :-D - since it has heat spreaders on the voltage regulators. If you want to overclock it is important to keep them cool. None of the other high end quality mATX boards I could find have heatspreaders on the VRs and this one is Tom's Recommended.

Thanks nordlead, i have a gigabyte board at home and hate the bios, can you recommend a good msi? if the gigabyte is that much better, ill get it. but not my first choice.

I'm by no means an OC expert, but from what I've read having quality voltage regulators is key to having a stable overclock that doesn't blow up the motherboard.

Having looked at AMD boards there don't seem to be a lot of good options for mATX. Why? Who knows, but I'd go with the one with the heat spreaders myself :-D

ASUS is a quality brand and they claim up to 140W TDP support. That should allow for some overclocking. Only reason I'm shying away from MSI is having read some of the failure stories there are claims that MSI used a faulty design on some of their low end boards. I don't know about that particular board, but since you want to overclock an already power hungry CPU I wouldn't risk running it on an MSI.

Do you have to go with the micro ATX form factor?

Based on the above linked thread I'd suggest looking into an aftermarket heatsink you can stick on the ASUS board (or another brand) or some of those mini-fans that you can point straight at the chips. MSI has a high failure rate and I don't think any of the recommended MSI boards are mATX.

I would. I just got done reading 4-5 stories about the 125W TDP six core AMD chips causing fires/explosions on MSI boards at stock speeds. I mean, if you are going to go stock it would probably work, but if you are going to overclock why waste your time with a board that is more likely to fail.

I like MSI and I use their boards, but I've also never put in a huge CPU and overclocked it either.

according to the hp website its a 95w cpu, its a 1045t specific to hp, not the 1055t
i did however cancel my order
