Which is better for same money: Desktop, always the desktop (assuming it is a decent value).

for $550 - try kijiji. I'd bet you can find a better used system (use the best CPU/GPU for the money hierarchy charts here on Tom's ardware to compare).

Generally desktops are faster than laptops for gaming. Get that desktop for now, and upgrade the graphics card when you have more money.
