hey guys, im buying a new CPU to upgrade from my stock Pentium G640 @3.8 GHz. So far, im stumped. I can either upgrade my CPU to AMD FX-4300, along with buying a new mobo (AM3+), which would cost me around 200. Or I can keep my stock FM2 mobo for a while longer and just upgrade my CPU to a AMD A8-5600K, which will only set me back around 100 dollars.

So what should I do? Is spending an extra 100 dollars really worth it? If I dont get the AM3+, I will buy a new FM2 mobo in about 4 months anyways.

Side note: this will be paired with a Radeon HD 7850 for gaming.

Solution
I suggest you to move to AM3+ because now new CPUs are with AM3 + Socket, always when you are upgrading go to the latest one don't be stuck at the old one 😉 FX 4300 is a good CPU so I would not say no to it. It is also 3.8Ghz

The Pentium G640 is a 1155 mobo cpu, it runs at 2.8ghz, you have WAY better cpu upgrade options if that is the case.

Install cpuz on the pentium system and post back with the mainboard manufacturer and model (under the mainboard tab).

it is a Foxconn 2ADA.

Indeed it's a 1155 motherboard, an intel h61 chipset to be exact.

Sadly h61 mobo's cant cpu overclock, or are very limited.

You can upgrade to a non K i5, or i7 sandy/ivy bridge cpu.

The i5 3470 would be a good place to start looking, you want non K versions with at least 4 cores preferably ivy based.

And they would absolutely destroy the 4300/A8-5600K in gaming.

I would flash the motherboard to the newest bios before installing a new cpu.

Good luck!

Solution

thank you, kind sir.

I thought you said you have a 1155 socket pentium Pentium G640 (but they don't go to 3.8ghz...), then you say you have a fm2 motherboard?

get a locked cheapish i5 cpu and you'll be very happy. Even an older cheap used i5 2400 would be decent and about the price of a new i3 nowadays

The answer is simple, the pentium g640 is a 1155 socket cpu. You DON'T have a fm2.

Run cpuz again and under the cpu tab look at "package" that should tell you the cpu socket type.

yeah, i realized that shortly after I replied. Sorry about that mix up. For some reason I thought I saw that the G640 was FM2.

That's what this website is here for!~
