Need help on first build system for around 2K

Hey guys. I will be returning home from a six month Afghanistan tour in about three weeks. This will be my first build. I have only upgraded, and replaced components before. This will be a father and son project, so I want it to be fun, and cool. Cost is not a significant object, but would like to keep it to less than $2500 if possible. My son will be using for gaming. Me, other than general use and internet, I really want to transfer all of the old family VHS and Hi8, onto disc (clueless on hardware and softwware needed).

You should be more than happy with that lot, you seem to have a agood idea on whats what

An i5-2500k would be more than sufficient for what you want to do. games only use the 4 physical cores and don't use the hyperthreading that the i7-2600k adds. Since you aren't really doing any other productivity work I'd take the $100 and either save it or put it toward something else.

16GB is way more than gaming needs. 8GB is more than enough and would save you $50 with no loss of performance. 4GB would be capable but since you are building a 2k system might as well buy 8GB. You can get the same RAM just 2x4GB instead of 4x4GB.

The motherboard seems excessive for the parts you listed. I mean, do you really need 4xSata 6G when you only have a single SSD? Staying with ASUS this board seems more than sufficient for your needs - ASUS P8Z68-V LGA 1155 - $179.99 - It has everything you need and should overclock fine.

Now, depending on how far you want to overclock, you may want to upgrade the CPU cooler with all the money you saved. The ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-B is a better and cooler looking CPU cooler. Or you could go with the Noctua NH-D14.

Your PSU is a good size if you plan on going SLI/Crossfire. To save some $ you could get a non-modular design with the same performance.

For a monitor, I like the Acer monitors as they are a lot cheaper. However, the only real way to choose a monitor is to go into a store and look at them. I haven't looked at monitors in years so I'm not going to give a recommendation.

Thank you. But, I actually don't feel that confident I know what's what. I based everything off of my list, from the reviews, and others post on this forum. Not sure if my PSU is underrated, or if the motherboard is overkill. At this point, I don't mind spending a couple of extra hundred here or there, but want to ensure everything is compatible.
