hey this is my first time here...and dont really know how to navigate here..so plz bear with me.

i have purchased a intel p4 3.0 ghz dual core, dual SLI bfg 7800 gtx oc, 4 gigs of corsair xms pro, 2 raptor 74 gb 10k rpm sata, and a kool lance water cooling unit. i have heard many horror stories about the dual core intels about power requirements.

Does anyone know for sure what kind of power supply i need? and how much power in total?
i didnt plan on over clocking this system..but if i did, it would be my first. is it a good idea?

I would suggest an Antec TruePower 550watt.
Guarantee it will be enough, trust me, I know these sorts of things...
even tho I forgot to sleep in a Holiday Inn last night...

Rich I will have to go against you this one. The Antec showed to much fluctuation in the stress test. Its probably more than enough for most rigs but not for this one.

SLI requires high AMPS on the 12V Rails and a very stable PSU. The Seasonic PSU is SLI certified its effeciency is around 80%. Heres a link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817151025

You're going to need one serious power supply thats for sure. If you want the best of the best(IMO) go with this

It's 510W PC power and cooling
Cost 200 bucks but it is super stable and has 34 Amps on the 12 Volt rail which is a heck of a lot. Whatever you decide make sure its a high end power supply or you will pay for it later with instability.

I admitted I did not sleep at a Holiday Inn Express... [/shrug]

What about the Thermatake 680watt with 3 12volt rails?

I think that it would be fine, but I havent tried it with 2 high end video cards. I sent the 7800 GTX back because it just doesnt scale as well with Intel rigs as the ATI cards do. Im waiting on R520 and Crossfire then i will know. I would think that it would do the job since i run my rig at almost 5Ghz 90% of the time. The only thing that would push my towards the Seasonic or the Pc whatever is that they are very effeicient. The Seasonic is around 80%

Thats not a split rail is it? Something that I have been wondering about is which would be better, A split rail with 18AMPS per rail or a regular single rail that would have 34 AMPS on the 12V Rail. Does anyone know?

if you want the absolute best, like that dude said before, go with a pc power& cooling psu... can't get any better than that. if ur OCing, the voltages will stay rock stable no matter what you throw at it. so if you buy it, the powersupply probably will never be the limitation of your OC
