Crucial has a checker, to make sure you get compatible products. More ram and an SSD would definitely be a good idea.

If you can return it, I would consider that, if the cost of an SSD, and more ram would have bumped you up to a better laptop, that already had those items to begin with. I know that might be difficult right now, though.

You're going to need to also upgrade the 1TB drive to a 5000GB to 1TB SSD to make any real difference in system performance. If you are not comfortable doing these upgrades yourself, you are probably better off getting a different laptop model like logainofhades said. 8GB and a 250-500GB SSD is probably going to add up to $100 to the cost of a different laptop model, but so is the user ram upgrade and SSD replacement. Getting a different model means you won't potentially void your warranty upgrading parts.

Even a 256gb SSD would make a huge improvement, over a 5400rpm HDD. Going by Crucial's page, your laptop does have an M.2 slot, for SSD. You could use the SSD for your OS, and the 1tb for mass storage. Legally, they cannot void warranty, for upgrading.
