Hey guys and gals.

I'm building, or rather upgrading my system but i'm completely lost as to which motherboard are actually good these days. Also my first ever AMD based build.
The 3 things i'm keeping from my current system is my MSI GTX 1070 Gaming, XFX 750W psu and my CM haf 912 case.

I already have a Ryzen 5 2600 cpu waiting here (100% new but got it as a freebie) so that's what's going in it for now. Don't worry about the RAM. I'm picking that from the QVL after i've settled on a motherboard and probably 3000/3200mhz depending on what said motherboard will support.

Now here's where my issue comes in. I've been reading and watching so so much comparisons and tests that i'm completely overwhelmed with what might be a good board fitting for me. I initially ordered the MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC but that's arrived DOA and it's not really available in my country right now (unless i want to wait a long time for it). I picked that as it seemed to be the best bang for your buck board. All the features you could wish with seemingly good VRM cooling and for a good price at 135 euro's. But like i said. Even if i wasn't hesitant for the same board after the DOA then it's still a no go as i can't wait as long as i'd need to for it.

I have been looking at everything from the MSI tomahawk, Gigabyte X470 aurus ultra gaming, Asus prima x470-pro, Trix boards, AsRock X470 Taichi and go on. I'm just lost.

Main two things are that i will upgrade the CPU for the new 3000 series later this year. After which i prefer to keep using it for about 5 years. I will probably overclock the 2600 and might also do that with the 3000 serie. Though i won't be pushing limits or competitive OC'ing or something. More just casually giving it a bit more oompf. I thought that a B450 board should be good for my purposes but i've been considering X470's because of my plan to upgrade to the 3000 series.

Budget for the mobo it more or less up to 200 euro's but that's the budget. I know very well that you don't always have to go to the limits of the budget to get something good.

So yeah. I tend to write a LOT more and longer than i'd ever need to but this is where i'm at. Hope you guys can give me some tips.

For the motherboards, I go into tiers, if you have a very high end CPU like Ryzen 7 and WANT to overclock, def recommend spending a good amount of a very decent motherboard.
But most people want a nice X470 and then they use a 2600 or even lower CPUs, they don't need such motherboard.

Now you have motherboards with the B450 very capable of overclocking and with a good VRM, like the MSI Tomahawk or the new Asrock B450 Steel series that will handle even the 8 core CPUs.

Personaly have better luck with the Asrock stuff, their bios are less buggy and their designs are pretty solid.

About the new Ryzen 7nm both, B450 and X470 should be the same in terms of support.

Yeah i know that AMD is supporting AM4 until 2020 so i figured that any of the two new chipsets would be good in that way. It's a 2600 right now but after the 3k release i'll probably get a 3700. Can't say it 100% sure because the prices are still just rumors afaik. But it will be a 3600X or if the price is as it's rumored right now probably the 3700. And with it having to last at least 5 years for both gaming and 3D modelling/rendering i will most certainly overclock at some point.

I was looking at the new AsRock B450 steel legend tbh. But it's so new i haven't seen any real hands-on reviews of it yet. Only an unboxing and of course the one article here on toms but that was pre-release and came across as a readout of the spec sheet more than something hands-on (i could be wrong though). I do use a AsRock right now. The good old Z77 Extreme 6. And i don't have a single bad thing to say about it. Plus with the Steel Legend being so new i have some hope it got rid of any of the possible "first line hiccups".

Taichi is the one board i hear incredible things about but i don't know if it might be to much for what i need. And of course the Fatal1ty boards but.. idk. "named" board used to be a bit iffy. You pay extra for the name and no real extra features or upgrades with it.

Looking at everything. VRM, features and cpu compatibility i'd almost guess that the B450 Steel Legend should be good. Nice price and has enough features and cooling to do what i need it to for the coming years.. What do you think?

Alright pulled the trigger on the B450 Steel Legend. My own experience with AsRock plus the really solid reviews on their VRM's on other B450 boards they made before this line i think i should be good with that one. Combined it with 3200mhz Kingston HyperX Predator HX432C16PB3K2/16 RAM which was on the QVL... Should arrive today so i'm all good to go 😀
