Hi Friends!

For your ready reference my System Specs as below:

Intel Core i7 4790k - 4.0Ghz
ASUS Maximus VII Hero
Kingston Technology 16BG -1600Mhz - DDR3
AORUS Geforce GTX1060 Xtreme Edition 6GB (Rev 2.0)
CORSAIR H100i V2 Liquid Cooler
FSP Epsilon 600Watts 80Plus White (Non-Modular)
CORSAIR Crystal 570X RGB
BenQ GW2270H 22" 1080p LED - Flicker Free

Actually getting problem with ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO, which I got Last week.

Earlier I was using i7 4790k with Gigabyte H97-D3H Motherboard. Overclocked to 4.6Ghz with 1.224v.
I only change CPU Multiplier to 46 and set voltage to 1.224 on H97-D3H. (Rest all on Auto, Didn't touch anything else).

While on Gigabyte board, which I Bench with ITXU, REALBENCH, CPU-Z, CineBench, I noticed that processor was drawing Power around 140Watts
when reaching Clock speed of 4.6Ghz. No Thermal Throttling, No Current Limit Throttling.

In-games like NFS Payback, ACO, MAFIA III etc etc........ Max Temp reached to 62c. at Max Graphics Settings at 1080p and during game when processor was running on 4.6Ghz, its getting proper watts.

Now when I installed ASUS Maximus VII Hero, I am facing following problems

First Note that processor need only 1.184v @4.4Ghz Turbo boost. Though later I increased it to 1.24v but didn't help.

BIOS DEFAULT SETTINGS

1) Asus Multicore "DISABLED" OR "AUTO" (Result is same)
2) CPU Ratio "SYNC ALL CORES"
3) Windows Power Plan set to "BALANCED"

USING WINDOWS 10 PRO X64

Now while in Windows, HWIinfo showing Idle Core Temp to 30c but Package Temp all the way up to 42c at idle. (Un-understandable)

Try to Benchmark with ITXU and Package Temp instantly hitting upto 96c - 100c and I noticed that Max Power drawing is only 34Watts.
Damnnnnnnn only 34Watts at Turbo Boost

TWEAK A LITTLE IN BIOS

1) ASUS Multicore "DISABLED" or "AUTO" (Result is same)
2) CPU Ration "AUTO"

Now in Windows, HWIINFO showing idel Core Temp 29c-30c and Package Temp is now vary between 36c-37c at idle

Try to Benchmark with ITXU and its showing "Current Limit Throttling" and not reaching to 4.4Ghz but max reach to 4.13Ghz and drawing power only
23Watts.

I am bit puzzled that what to do. What settings do I need to change in BIOS so Processor get proper Watts. Because I know that If processor get proper watts then it will run fine and if get lower or higher than its a problem.

Further, I again changed the board to H97-D3H and its working fine. So back to ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO

I TRY TO MANUALLY SET CORE RATIO TO 46 AND CHECK IN -GAME "FAR CRY 4", ITS TAKING ONLY 1.5W Max @4.6Ghz and Heating up.. Check the attached PICTURE. (Whereas on H97-D3H was not crossing 48c Max @4.6Ghz)

I would run HWINFO and look specifically while running the ASUS board the Core ratio, and make sure its actually going to x46, my bet is that it isn't, and it this is the case, then it is a sensor ont the motherboard that is limiting it,. (see and experienced it on an Asus Z87 Gryphon in the past) and only way to get around it is to run a program called THROTTLESTOP and uncheck the BD PROCHOT.

good luck

What I did set BIOS to default i.e. Install Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility. Manually tuning and set

Vcore : 1.248v
Core : 4.6Ghz
Long Power : 88Watts
Short Power : 110Watts
Current is on : 1023 as proposed

Benchmark as well as Stress test with IXTU and its now getting proper Wattage i.e. 140Watts max and touching 4.6Ghz as well as Temp not crossing 76c. Max reached to 81c.

My question is that if the SENSOR is bad or Buggy then how its giving proper wattage now?

According to ASUS, it says that before overclocking, need to set BIOS Default and install Intel Management Interface (MEI) then overclock. Doesn't understand this.

Yep my Horribleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee mistake ever I did. Damnnnnnnn it. I didn't read about AI SUITE III before. How could I miss that. Damnnnnnnn it.

Now no solution overall as no settings available to revert back.

its good for tweaking setting, but once proven i would always go into the bios and set those tweaks for real use. Been using AI suite since my Rampage 3 extreme board 7-8 years ago, I think of it as a tool not a solution. Once tweaked in windows you reboot and do the final tune in the bios.

OK Bro. I will do. However, one thing I forget to mention that I used following AI SUITE III

Version 1.05.14 2018/01/25 --------146.47 MBytes

Dual Intelligent Processors 5
Fix compatibility issue with the latest Windows updates. Dual Intelligent Processors 5 update v1.05.14 patches an issue that resulted in the Windows power plan being forced to “balanced". Note that this patched build only includes the DIP5 utility, it does not include other utilities in AI Suite 3.
- AI Suite 3 v3.00.13
- Dual Intelligent Processors 5 v1.05.14

I think this is not a complete version and only a Patch.

Is this the problem because when I used this to overclock, it doesn't start tuning. I think that I did use the wrong one.

Sorry for Bumping again but finally what I figured out as below:

I think I figured out the problem and i.e. Processor TDP & Current Settings.

While select CPU RATIO to "AUTO", This set Max power to 88W and Max Short Power to 110W and set Current Limit to 105A. So due to 105A, Processor not boost to 4.4Ghz

If you increase the Current to 125A, Processor easily touch 4.4Ghz and no Temp Issue even at 100% on all cores with Voltage 1.184v (Manual Set)

Now if we set CPU Core to "Sync All Cores" This set Max power to "UNLIMITED" and Max Short Power to "UNLIMITED" and set Current Limit to "UNLIMITED" due to unlimited states, Processor face heat-up issue and crash.

One more thing as below:

CPU Ratio "AUTO" - PKG Temp 34c-35c idle
While all 4 Cores remain at 30c but cannot reach 4.4Ghz

CPU Ratio "Sync All Cores" - PKG Temp remain Constant 41c-42c idle while all 4 Cores remain at 30c but getting BSOD during high CPU Insentive Game this is just because Unlimited TDP and Current.

What I understand in this week that mostly Z97 Chips are set to think that when "Sync to all Cores" it means user need to OC and need all things Unlimited and that's the problem I noticed after reading several threads.

Don't mind but what I read heatup issue is Mostly related with ASUS Motherboards as people posted in forums. No matter how lower your set Voltage, it crashed.

However, tonight I will try to set MAX 88W & MAX SHORT 160W in BIOS as well as set Current Limit to max 140A as I tested that its need for 4.6Ghz (in my case, don't know about others). 125A need for 4.4Ghz.

FYI, I set "AUTO - CPU CORE" and used IXTU and set the above settings to reach to 4.4Ghz and 4.6Ghz. Result with 100% load @4.6Ghz with 1.224v stable, Temp didn't cross 76c in IXTU Stress test and CINEBENCH.
