Can i retain my old partition in D: because my games are on it and reformat my C: to install new windows in it because i dont want to buy a new hdd?

absolutely. they only difference would be installing the motherboard drivers if you changed the brand/model. well you may need to authenticate windows again. but you won't need to reinstall windows unless you want to, which is a good idea anyhow.

there is a great chance that you won't have to. the only difference is the drivers for the motherboard, chipset, network,; those you would insert the motherboard dvd for, some other stuff like the usb, if moving to usb3, would have a good chance of having windows update installing them,.
