Hello everyone! My current set up is:

CPU: FX-8350 @ stock
GPU: GTX 770
PSU: Corsair hx750
RAM:G skill ripjaws x ram 16GB
Motherboard: ASUS Asus m5a99fx pro r2.0

So I wanted to upgrade my graphics card to a GTX 980 but I have read that the 8350 will bottleneck the GTX 980. So should I upgrade my processor to a FX-9590 or get a new motherboard and get a i5 4690K(seems like a lot of work switching from AMD to Intel) or what should I do? Or maybe overclock my 8350?(Its using stock fan so could I even do that?) Any help is GREATLY appreciated and I hope you have a wonderful day!

I built an AMD based system for a friend of mine and got his FX 8320 up to a stable 4.5GHz. He has an AMD R9 290 and even with that CPU overclock his GPU was still somewhat bottlenecked and he saw huge improvements in performance when he switched to the i5 4670K. Considering the GTX980 is actually quite a bit more powerful than the R9 290 I'd definitely recommend going for a new motherboard and the i5 4690K, AMD's CPUs just don't make sense when going more high-end, even when I had my old i5 2500K it thrashed AMD CPUs when it came to gaming.

I certainly recommend the MSI boards at the moment, I got my new i5 4690K + MSI Z97i setup the other day and haven't looked back!

I would love to do that but how does using a new motherboard with a old hard drive work? Can I just plug it in the new set up motherboard and all my stuff will be there?

Generally AMD to AMD and Intel to Intel it can work but with such a big change I doubt it'd work to be honest, in the past I've been able to boot but then BSOD so you would need to backup your data most likely. It's a bit of hassle but in my opinion it is a much better option than upgrading to new CPU with no real upgrade path and no real performance gain.

Alright cool thank you so much I think I am going to get the MSI Z97 and the i5-4690K! That should be fine right?

The 9590 is a rip off. It's possible to achieve the same performance levels with your 8350 by overclocking. As for a bottleneck, no. The 8350 will not bottleneck a 980. You may have slightly lower frames than a i5 or an i7 but that's simply the Intel's have a stronger single threaded platform. Buy a cooler and overclock.

Nice PSU btw.

Thank you very much!! :) But if thats the case then honestly I don't know if I am going to upgrade my motherboard and CPU. Can I overclock the 8350 with only its stock fans and such?

I'm sorry but that is simply not right, I've found that an FX 8320 even when clocked at 4.5GHz and paired with an R9 290 is significantly slower than when it is paired with an i5. The most extreme examples I've seen were in the Battlefield games.

And yes, the MSI Gaming motherboards are a great choice in my opinion.

I'm sorry but your personal experiences don't equate to anything here. Every person can have a different experience. If I'm incorrect, you're going to have a busy night correcting all of these people too.

Like I said, the 8350 will have lower FPS vs an Intel CPU because the 8350 is weaker in single threaded applications/games. It's far easier to upgrade a GPU and CPU cooler than it is to replace CPU and motherboard. Will the Intel be superior, sure. Major differences, application specific.

Thank you VERY, VERY much sir! With your help I have come to the conclusion that I am just going to get a cooler and overclock it! Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to help me, as it will have saved me lots of money and time soon! Have a wonderful day my friend!

i have to advise against upgrading to another ddr3 based system. buy a decent cooler (better than the 212+ " recommendations?) and overclock that 8350 until the new tech comes out for both companies and get that. Don't jump in at the end of the line unless you have the other board and cpu sold right now.

That's not a bad show by the AMD CPUs to be fair, hopefully the OPs experience is in line with these results and not with my experience.
