Need help upgrading video card

I currently have a really shitty video card pci-e 2.0 yada yada yada about a gig of ram just not something you brag about. I would like to get a new one however I cannot seem to find out if my mother board GA-990FXA-UD5, will support a pci-e 3.0 video card. I have been told both ways by people who claim to be experts in the field and I have a friend who swears up and down that he installed a pci-e 3.0 video card and it didn't work on his computer because it was a 2.0 slot but yet another friend swears just the opposite.

I understand if there is no end all answer but some just anything concrete would be nice because right now I have no idea.

I'm not a hard core gamer I'm a programer so the graphics wasn't in my mind that big of a deal. However I have found that even the small and few games that I do play can really work that video card harder then it can support. So I'm not looking for some big monster of a video card for gaming I would just like something nice and new that I don't have to worry about until I am actually building a new computer because everything is outdated 2 days down the road.

Cards are PCIE forward and backwards compatible. A PCIE 2.0 will run in a PCIE3.0 and the reverse.

Think the ASUS Strix is compatible, not very cunny when it comes to ports and such though. Best of luck to you!

This is your motherboard. It supports 2x pci express x16.
You can add two pci 3.0 cards in your motherboard.
