hi, im rather new to the world of overclocking, but it sounds like an interesting thing. I have basic knowlege about doing it, but have recantly run into a problem. After doing some reading on the net i decided to go out a buy a celeron 566 in hope of overclocking it to 850, as i have heard this is easy to do. Well it turns out i cant even see speeds over 680 before my system begins to lose performance. I dont know what im doing wrong. I have an asus p3v4x which i am currently using in JumperFree mode. The thing thing that confuses me is that whenever i read articles on overclocked 566's it says that the chips default voltage is 1.5v, the one i have is defaulted at 1.7. Also when i boot my computer it autodetects the processor as being a Intel Celeron 566E. Is there a difference between the 566 and 566E? Have a purchased the wrong chip? I am lost.
Please, if anyone knows anything at all that could help me, could they please tell me.
Thank you,

Mathew

You are probably overheating it when you try to overclock to far-try getting a bigger heatsink/fan and/or Artic Silver thermal paste. If you are currently using the stock heatsink pad, try romoving it and using some paste instead. Even the Radio Shack paste works better than a pad. And when your SURE that your CPU is cool enough (under 50C at MAX load), if it still won't go higher raise your voltage to 1.80v.

Suicide is painless...........

well it turns out it was a overheating issue. After deriving a wild cooling plan, i managed to over clocked the 566 to 937. So far so good. Thanks for the help.

haha, sure. I live in toronto, ont canada and it is currently pretty cold outside. So just for testing purposes i decided to slick my computer outside my window, and proceed with the over clock. At 850 mhz it ran quite stable, and seemed like it could handle more. I upped the bus speed to 110 which ran it at 935. Again i upped, this time to 112. It ran at this speed (952), but generated errors in windows, so back down to 935 it was. I found the best voltage setting was 1.8. (up .1 from default). As far as temperature goes, at idle my processor sat at 30 C and max temperature i saw after playing quake 3 for about 4 hours was 75 C. I know this is still hot, so now that i know it has the potential i will look into that arctic silver thermal paste as well as a heatsink/fan upgrade. Then hopefully i can run my computer inside my house. I probally wont be able to get her to do 935, but im sure with the proper accessories, 850 is an attainable goal. Fact is i had no pad whatsoever between my heatsink and cpu. Oh and the md temp was 2 C, which seems cold, but gave me no visable errors. My cooling method wasn't really wild, but more short term 🙁 Either way, at least i know my processor is capable, and i know what it is i have to resolve.

Once again thanks for your input.
