need help with a dumpster diving project

restoring a compaq 5133 desktop found in the trash without a cd-r
98M ram
win98se

put in a Verbatim branded cd burner 481648AX. It will read cds and cd rws;
but each of three burning programs [nero, cheetah and cd burner express] I
have tried say there is no cd-rw present.

W98's device manager says the cd drive is working properly and driver is
current.

any ideas or suggestions to get the burning proggies to see the hw
appreciated.

is the softare you are using (such as nero) the full version...
or merely the software that came with some other cd-burner?
if it was "bundled" software it will generally only work with the specific
device it came with

Test it with a Knoppix disc.

Is the burner on its own ide cable as master ?. Or is it sharing with C:
drive ?, should be slave.

Do you have the correct ASPI layer installed??

Try Burn4Free or CDBurnerXPPro. They are free... Ben Myers
