Hello,

Recently I've been experiencing recurring Blue Screens of Death with my laptop computer which is less than 2 years old. I get Blue Screened at any time - using the computer, starting up the computer, while the computer is sitting idle, or even shutting down the computer. I thought I had a previous state to restore the computer to, but after looking I found I did not have one before the problems began. I've had various error codes on the Blue Screen, which are:

"System Service Exception"
"Critical Process Died" (get this a lot)
"Kernel Data inpage error"
"Bad System Config Info"
"0xc000021a"
"Unexpected Store Exception"
"Memory Management"
"Process1 Initialization Failed"

I've tried several things to fix the problem, which haven't resulted in a solution. What I've done so far:
Updated Drivers
Resetting BIOS
Windows Memory Diagnostic - No errors found
CHKDSK on C & D drives - No errors found
Full Virus Scan - No viruses found
SFScan - Results said errors had been found and repaired, but no effect on continual Blue Screen.
Did a Windows 10 reset (keeping files)

Since doing all that, if anything the blue screen crashes are getting more numerous, to the point I feel lucky being able to post this. At this point I am expecting the computer to spontaneously burst into flames.

Please advise on what would I should do to solve the issue - or recommend your favorite brand of Marshmellows to roast over flaming hardware. Thank you for your time.

Here's some information about my computer (not sure what's needed, let me know if more information required):

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

What version of Windows 10 are you on at the time of writing? We're on version 20H2, waiting for the new version to come around. Did you manually update the drivers, after cross referencing them with the drivers found off of MSI's support site or did you use a third party app to verify the integrity of your drivers?

BIOS version for your laptop?

"System Service Exception"
"Critical Process Died" (get this a lot)
"Kernel Data inpage error"
"Bad System Config Info"
"0xc000021a"
"Unexpected Store Exception"
"Memory Management"
"Process1 Initialization Failed"

one common feature of these BSOD is they could be caused by the ssd.
try running Seatools SSD GUI and run tests using it - https://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/downloads/seatools/

critical process died is a windows error, many BSOD can be blamed on drivers but Critical Process died is specifically windows files. I could guess it is boot files based on other errors you have.
"0xc000021a" is a boot error.
"Bad System Config Info" makes me think there is something wrong with drive win 10 is on.
"Kernel Data inpage error" refers to page file, page file is on ssd.

I would clean install win 10 instead of resetting and keeping info.

Windows memory test isn't best
Try running memtest86 on each of your ram sticks, one stick at a time, up to 4 passes. Only error count you want is 0, any higher could be cause of the BSOD. Remove/replace ram sticks with errors.
Memtest is created as a bootable USB so that you don’t need windows to run it

Hello,

Thanks for the responses. I had been on an older version of Windows, but updated to 20H2 maybe a week ago (hasn't helped). Drivers I updated through the Device Manager, not sure if that's not enough. Bios version is American Megatrends Inc. E16P6IMS.109.

I'm about to be away from my computer for awhile, but I'll try running Seatools and Memtest 86 when I'm back and hopefully have something to report later. If that doesn't turn anything up then a clean install may be in the cards (or perhaps it should be anyway).

In one of my older PC, an i5-4570 + H81M-E, I get the stop code 0xc000021a BSOD upon boot-up after installing KB5000842.

A way around it was to disable Driver Signature Enforcement in Boot-up Options but this is just temporary until the next reboot and it's a feature I didn't want to disable permanently.

I had to recover the system volume from a backup I made that morning. So now, my PC is sorta ok.... just don't install KB5000842 in the meantime.

I've installed and run Seatools for Windows (Seatools SSD GUI didn't recognize my disk drive). I've run all of the tests it offers except for the "Fix All Long" (I keep getting blue screens midway through that test), and updating the firmware (I'm assuming this is one I should run at some point too). None of those tests found any errors.

I've run Memtest 86 on one of the Ram sticks (took awhile). No errors found.

I'm going to try to get a complete scan on Seatools Fix All Long (and then use it to update the firmware?). Then get Memtest86 to scan the other sticks of Ram. I suspect this will take a while, though so far nothing has turned up any errors. If no errors are found by the end of the tests then I guess the next step is a clean install of Windows. And if that doesn't fix it... uh...

Anyway. I'll get started on all of that and report results. Thanks so far for the advice.

Can you follow option one on the following link - here - and then do this step below: Small memory dumps - Have Windows Create a Small Memory Dump (Minidump) on BSOD - that creates a file in c windows/minidump after the next BSOD

  1. Open Windows File Explorer
  2. Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump
  3. Copy the mini-dump files out onto your Desktop
  4. Do not use Winzip, use the built in facility in Windows
  5. Select those files on your Desktop, right click them and choose 'Send to' - Compressed (zipped) folder
  6. Upload the zip file to the Cloud (OneDrive, DropBox . . . etc.)
  7. Then post a link here to the zip file, so we can take a look for you . . .

Was about to bring up minidumps, actually. I've had it creating backups of minidumps for awhile. Attached is a zip of the dumps for the past few days (just the ones I could get it to create - often on the blue screen the progress stays at 0% no matter how long I wait and I have to manually restart it, resulting in no dump). As I mentioned in the original post, it'll crash in all manner of usage, but the most common crash in these dumps is on startup.

Here's a link to the dumps in google drive:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-OtwCCon2SVvSgfKFGFMsayf4evQumEP/view?usp=sharing

No firmware update available, so unfortunately SeaTools has turned up nothing. 2 Ram sticks scanned with Memtest86 and no errors found. 2 more to go. Hopefully have that done tomorrow, I'll report, check in, and then I guess do a clean install of Windows.

"Critical Process Died" (get this a lot)
looks at 8 in a row... understatement

Critical process died is a windows BSOD - I said this already - most BSOD are caused by drivers, this one is caused by windows crashing. There are a number of files windows cannot work without. csrss.exe is one of those, its the client server your user runs in. Windows cannot work without it and crashes. Other caused by Service Host, just to be different.

You are win 10 2004, Win 10 2104 is due in a few days time. Not sure its worth clean installing so soon to another version update
right click start button
choose powershell (admin)
type SFC /scannow and press enter
once its completed, copy/paste this command into same window:

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth
and press enter

SFC fixes system files, second command cleans image files, re run SFC if it failed to fix all files and restart PC

this is too old, MSI need to update it, 11 years is too much
Jun 04 2010winio64.sysMSI Dragon Gaming Center driver
I would take it off if you don't use dragon centre

Yeah, lot of Critical Processes dying, though that's the one that tends to freeze the blue screen the least and produce the most minidumps. "Kernel Data inpage error" and "Unexpected Store Exception" often just freeze the blue screen and don't produce anything.

Memtest86 came up with nothing and fully running all the Seatools tests didn't find anything either. The SFC scans I do no longer are able to find any errors (ran one as recent as yesterday). I tried running the Restore Health command in the command prompt just now and it said " 'Repair-WindowsImage' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file." Do I need to run an SFCScan directly before running that command?

I've got everything backed up, so I don't mind running a clean install at this point. Would that be safe to do next?

Kernel Data inpage error" and "Unexpected Store Exception"
Those 2 errors + how Seatools reacts to hdd + not getting any dumps for those crashes makes me wonder about that ssd.

no, that command doesn't work in command prompt, its a powershell command (I did say that above)
this is its CMD (Admin) version -
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

maybe try running this on ssd as well - crystaldiskinfo - https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/

I appreciate all the diagnostic tools I'm being pointed towards. I'm as frustrated as everyone else it hasn't turned something up. I've never been so frustrated to so often see "Pass." At this point should I try the clean install?

Ran the clean install. No big problems or Blue Screen yet, though it's still early. Computer's running a little slow, though I suspect that's due to it downloading drivers and updating. One thing I have noticed is that my C: and D: drives seem to have been combined into one. I believe they were partitioned along the SSD and HDD. I'm not sure if having them combined into one drive is a good thing - I suspect not, but I don't know. Should I try to partition them again? Or leave them as it is?

C & D were just partitions on the same drive before. There is no negative effect to having it all as 1 partition. there is no benefit from having 2 on 1 drive, if you reinstall win 10 it would need to wipe both anyway. Normal reason you have more than one is to separate the contents but there is no real point if its all on the same drive.
On my last PC I had 2 partitions on my 2tb hdd, mainly as having all the space seemed like it should be split up. Current PC I didn't see the point as it just got messy on my last pc
If C & D had been 2 different drives, it would show as 2 like below
ns4hhEk.jpg

you could shrink C and make 2 now but its probably best to leave as is as now windows won't ever complain about not enough space.

If you want to save data for next time or just so you don't need to copy it all elsewhere, buy an ssd, use it as win 10 boot drive, and put everything like documents, music, pictures, movies onto the hdd. It is how I used to do it. Then if you reinstall win 10 you only lose what is on C drive, can still use the files on next install by linking the library folders to the hdd.

The Crystaldiskinfo report shows it was C & D drive on same drive.

Alright, I guess I'll leave as is then. One thing I wanted to ask, unrelated to the Blue Screen, since backing up my files all of them have been renamed with a time stamp from when they were backed up. This has caused some programs to have trouble running. Is there a simple or quick way to remove those time stamps from batches of files (it's on thousands) or would I have to rename them all individually?

I don't actually know the answer to that, I would suggest you start another question as someone else will know. They won't look in here :)
