I plan on purchasing these parts very soon (within 2 days) if all goes well.
I would love some comments / critique on my build. Also, I really need help on finding a GPU.
Purpose of build and what I need
1. This will be a school computer (undergrad/graduate for the next 6-8 years). I will be doing data calculations, numerical analysis, some minor 3d modelling, running physics based applications, etc. Also some video editing.
2. I would *like* to be able to play *some* games, but this is, at the moment, secondary.
3. I want to run a Linux based environment (likely Ubuntu)
4. I want to have a dual monitor set up, so a GPU that allows this is a must.
Build
CPU: Intel Core i7-6800K 3.4GHz 6-Core Processor ($409.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($24.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Asus X99-A II ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard ($225.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($124.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 850 Pro Series 512GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($220.70 @ NCIX US)
Case: Fractal Design Define S w/Window ATX Mid Tower Case ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($79.49 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $1165.03
NO GPU YET.
Some GPU Options
MAX I want to spend on GPU: $250.00.
I would like more VRAM, but that is just a pleasantry.
GTX 750 Ti LINK
Note: I can get the 750 Ti for around $80.00 so this is the best budget GPU that I've seen. However, I don't like the fact that it's much older and much less performance over the others that I'm viewing.
GTX 950 $150.00 LINK / GTX 960 $200.00 LINK / GTX 970 4GB $240.00 LINK
Here, the 970 seems like an awesome card. I think I can get it under 250 on some websites. Love that it has 4 GB, but this card is pushing my max budget on GPU.
GTX 1060 (brand new GPU) ~$250.00 ?
While this is likely the best possible GPU and newest, it is currently unavailable and rising in price, making it a likely no-go for me.
AMD r9 380 4GB $175.00 LINK
RX 480 / 470 / 460
Same situation here as the GTX 1060, new cards, out of stock everywhere, rising in price. IF I can find one for less than $250.00 or so, it might be a good option .
r7 370 4GB $200.00 LINK
...And many other choices out there..
I'd really appreciate it if the lovely community at Tom's Hardware (who I've come across many threads in my search) can help:
a) Critique my build
b) Help me find a great GPU
Thank you!
