Need help with connecting a WAN port to a LAN port

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the long read and if this seems odd but here is what I am trying to do and looking for a programing help or new equipment to work with.

I currently have a DSL modem from my local landline service hooked up to a (Netgear) FVS318G with a JGS524 and WG302.

The problem is my landline service can only give me a maximum of 1.57MBpS down and 0.41MBpS up (yes they are the correct numbers) Better known as super slow. (No way to get any faster by land)

So after much research, I finally ordered and got in a vervizon wireless LTE unit which is giving me 27.47 mbps down and 1.09 mbps up, though the up is only slightly double, the down is over 17 times faster, and the up is better off peek hours. (So a lot better than my current landline)

So when I order in the unit from verizonwireless, which is a Novatel T1114, i was told after asking many times before pulling the tirgger that I will be able to use the device as a modem and just set the current FSV318G to ask for the IP & DNS automatically.

Well that is not the case or I would not be asking for help here.

Before you ask, the Novatel unit only does up to 10 wireless devices and 3 wired devices and though we are a household of only 2, I have over 36 devices on my current network which are mostly hardwired, so reprogramming everything on to the novatel is N/G because not enough room with just 3 ports.

And for the record I don't play any games online, nor do I use any tvservice like netflix and I don't want to.

I do stream down and up youtube from time to time, but 90% of what I use the internet service for is email, website design and software updates.

So I am looking for a way to either program the FVS318G to work or purchase a new unit that will allow me to use 1, 2 or all 3 of the lan ports on the NOVATEL T1114 as the gateway for my existing network to get internet access.

For those asking I have a bunch of printers, many hard drives for video storage, small IP telephone system, ip cameras, yada yada yada for just under 40 hookups. Which is 27 short of the 3 hard and 10 wireless the wireless unit from verizon allows me.

I know enough to get myself in trouble, but I don't work with these devices daily.

Does anyone have an equipment suggestion and or suggested programming information they can provide.

I thank you for your time on this question

Regards - Tom

Nope, the T1114 cannot be set as a modem and you cannot just attach it to the FSV318G business class firewall/switch. Neither the unmanaged switch or AP can help either.

AFAIK the best workaround is this (and it requires a router, something inexpensive is fine unless you have a spare something laying around):

Set a DMZ for your new router connected to the T1114 so that way the T1114 mimics just a modem.

Turn off the WiFi on the T1114.

Only the router will shows up as a connected device on the T1114 and the router will handle the DHCP for your internal network.

First I assume that your T1114 default IP is 192.168.1.1.

Set up the WAN on the new router as a static IP of 192.168.1.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Set the DMZ of the T1114 to match the 192.168.1.2 in the advanced settings.

Then you will need to change the new router LAN IP address to a different subnet, such as 192.168.0.1 (any 192.168.x.1 where x is not 1 that the T1114 uses) thus all of your internal network DHCP addresses will be on this subnet and everything going out to the Internet goes to the T1114 WAN address of 192.168.1.1.

Thank you RealBeast,

A few more questions if you don't mind.

Do you have a recommended router model, only asking because I am not sure what a true router is compared to my FVS318G, because I thought that was a router. I will not hold you to any suggestion just not sure I would end up buying the right type of equipment...

My next question is will I be able to use my WG302 with the new router you are suggesting, my reason why is the unit is setup so that I get a very large coverage at my home, I purposely added this to my network to extend the range of the average WiFi.

I am assuming the JGS524 will work because all it is , is a pass through.

Again thank you for your help in this matter.

My bad, yes now that I look closer at the FVS318G it has a WAN port and DHCP capability and should be able to attach to the LAN port of the T1114 and be set up to work as I described for a new router.

Simply do the ISP setup as I described for a different router -- same concept just using the FVS318G. Also, your choice as far as a DNS server -- you can either use the same T1114 address that you use for the WAN IP of the FVS318G or you can use 9.9.9.9 (Quad9) or 8.8.8.8 (Google public DNS). I've started using Quad9 as it blocks many malware sites and is quite fast.

I believe that you have to turn off the wireless on the T1114 to do this though because the IP addresses used by your devices will be on a different subnet than your LAN, unless you can designate only up to 10 devices to use a different subnet and not communicate with your network. If you need wireless at that point you can add another AP (or router configured as an AP) attached to a LAN port in your LAN (you cannot use the other two on the T1114 using this approach). This would keep the entire network under the control of the FVS318G DHCP service.

I want to thank you "RealBeast" for the information you provided, it took a little working to get some of the other locations to setup, but it now works perfect.

Of note:

I went in to the T1114 and changed it's IP: from the 192.168.1.1 to another address rather than changing the current networks information, it worked like a charm, i didn't have to reprogram any of the current network, the T1114 is acting just like a new router.

The only thing that was a problem is that the T1114 needed to be powered down and battery pulled to take the hard IP change and DMZ assignment. Just turning off and on for reset did not work. Don't ask me why.

But after the full power down and battery pull, it came up in about 5 minutes and is working.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hello Realbeast,

I have another question on my network.

On the DMZ, this only corresponds to the single IP address set in the settings for the DMZ correct?

so if I set the DMZ to #.#.#.05, all the other IP's in that router are still protected, just the single IP is opened up and sent on to the WAN on the second router correct?

Yes, that is correct.

Be aware though that connections made from the DMZ device to other devices on the network can be a security issue in terms of malware transfer, so just use safe practices. I assume that the open machine is just for gaming needs, which is not much of a security issue.

It's the same setup as before except new logistic's

My Nephew lives about 1/2 of a mile away line of site, properties touch, he has a cable modem service with 200mps down/100mps up he is at the road. xfinity.

I picked up on amazon a pair of small point to point devices.

I am connected to his LAN, set an IP static on his LAN with the DMZ and then put that IP in like I did before for my router and fire device as the static IP for the router.

So I am behind a firewall on my end, but just wanted to confirm he was still protected with that DMZ turned on.

The would have to hack me and then go back to him, which I am not worried about because of my firewall and router device, and he has nothing on his end except his cable device with netflix, his cell phones, a laptop and a printer.

So I just wanted to make sure I was correct in my thought and setup.

Thanks for the reply
