Hey guys, first post here.

I'm going to be doing 4K video editing for my church soon, and I was wondering what CPU I need to get in order to more effectively edit and render video. This is my current setup:

CPU: AMD FX-6100
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
MOBO: Biostar A960D+
GPU: Asus Strix GeForce GTX 960 2GB
RAM: 16GB Corsair DDR3 RAM @1333Mhz
PSU: Corsair PSU, not sure what the exact wattage is
Storage: 240GB Samsung 840 EVO
1 TB Seagate HDD
OS: Windows 10 Home

I know I need a better CPU in order to effectively render video, I was looking at the FX 8350, but I wasn't sure if there was a better option.

For me, upgrading to a new CPU/MOBO isn't an option, because, as this was a pre-built, my Windows code is tied to the motherboard.

Any help would be appreciated.

I rarely log on here but saw this thread again. Actually an FX 8320 is a fairly significant gain from the older fx series 6 core fx6100, mostly with regards to gaming and overall computing performance. That said yes you are better off with Ryzen and the new CPU architecture. Instead of the 10% performance gain with an fx8320 vs. the older fx6100 you would get around 40% in multitasking and 20% on gaming with something like a Ryzen 1600.
There's also 8370 on the list but 8350 may be a better deal as you already have good enough CPU cooler. For your use number of cores matter more than raw frequency.
W10 license is tied to your MB but also to MS account and may be transferable to new MB.

Your board isn't good enough to run anything past a 95w CPU mate which is an issue.

You could run an fx 8300 or 8320e on it but I'm not sure its worth the money for the performance increase you'd get.

You can tie the win 10 license to your ms user account instead of hardware now meaning upgrading the system completely is fairly seamless & windows will activate fine.

My advice, and I only need to say it one time, is get an FX 8320 now, and DO NOT upgrade to Ryzen until 3-4-5 months have passed and the bugs (if any) have been worked out, and the chipsets and also Windows 10 have acclimated to both the new processor and boards. FX 8320 @ 3.5 ghz will be fine on your board.

Yes but it's hardly a step up.

I mean if you can get an FX8320e for.. well, next to nothing, or free, then sure.

But if you start spending any reasonable amount of money on it, you might as well start saving towards an actual upgrade, rather than a sidegrade.

From what I can see searching google for TH and ANANDTECH threads, the difference between FX 6100 and FX8320E in video encoding could be as little as 5-10%...

The only problem with waiting for an upgrade is that I have to get RAM/CPU/MOBO, which is 50% of the way toward a new build. And, if I'm doing a new build I might as well get a new GPU, better case etc. I was just looking for a fix that would allow me to use my current motherboard a little bit longer. If it would be better to wait, I can do that.

How much better off would I be waiting for Ryzen?

Waiting for Ryzen might get you better performance/value, it might not. It might lower Intel's prices.. it might not.

In the end you'd still need a new CPU, motherboard and DDR4 Ram, so that will come down to which suits you and your budget better.

I'd recommend waiting, just as it should only be another 2 weeks, but if you wanted to upgrade to skylake/kabylake now you absolutely could.

Or, if you're lucky, people will be upgrading from the FX series to Ryzen and you might be able to get some upgrades SUPER cheap!

I've already seen a full working fx8350 gaming pc go for sale in my area for under £200! crazy.

Even if the system is pre-built?

If it really isn't that big of a difference between the 6100 and 8320, I might just wait and upgrade straight to Ryzen.
