I'm trying to find out what is the best heatsink for Q6600 with a eVGA 680i A1 motherboard. I heard the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme is the best, but you have to lappe it for it to fit, and I'm really not that comfortable with doing that. I've also heard that the Tuniq Tower 120 is also a really good one, but I've heard that it's kind of hard to get it to fit on the 680i. So what do you guys suggest, and please let me know if you have used your suggested heatsink with a Q6600 on a eVGA 680i A1 motherboard. Thanks for the advice in advanced.

If you don't have to, then why do I read so many people complaining that they have to.
They do?
Lapping your HS involves practically no risk. If you suck really bad at it, then maybe you will get a bit higher temps. The only way you can break it is if you somehow manage to sand all the way through the base and the pipes, but that would take a machine sander or a hell of a lot of hand sanding.

I am also looking for a heatsink fan recommendation for the evga 680i SLI A1 MB with the e6750 CPU. I was considering the Ultra 120 extreme as well, but if you look up the faq on Thermalright's website you will find that it isnt compatible with the Evga MB. Here's the quoted faq from Thermalright:

Question 3:

Can Thermalright Ultra-120 fit on an EVGA 680i motherboard?
Answer:

The Ultra-120 together with its backplate can be installed on motherboard such as the ASUS Striker Extreme (680i) Edition without a problem but for other EVGA motherboards, Ultra-120 will not be able to be installed due to the micro SMD on the backside of the board and underneath the CPU socket. The backplate for the Ultra-120, if installed, will be pressed against those micro SMD, risking damage and/or causing a short circuit. We will be developing a solution soon to solve that problem.

Good luck.

Ok well now I know at least that I can't get the Thermalright Ultra-120. The Tuniq Tower 120 then sounds like the better choice, cause I've heard great things about this one. Does any one know if it would work the a Q6600 with a eVGA 680i A1 motherboard.

i'm pretty sure there is a small modification you can make to the eVGA 680i board to install the ultra-120, i have it bookmarked on my home machine, so when i get back from work i will post it.

the mod involves drilling a hole in the motherboard, or alternatively using some rubber feet to make the mounting frame sit a little off the board while still maintaining adequate pressure.
