Recently I've been having serious internet problems with comcast. I've been getting outages on my modem recently. They've been getting more and more frequent. Today I can't get over 5 Mbp's Down and 0 up (Usually 60 down 5 up). I know its not a mechanical problem as the modem doesnt turn off and I've checked all connections. Getting really fustrating, it seems like I'm getting throttled.

One thing I've found is my internet speed will sometimes spike to 500 mbps about every 5 min and then thats when the internet turns off for about 30 sec repeat ad nausem.

Solution
Check your incoming connections and as much of the related network wiring as safely as you can.

Look for signs of damage anywhere and everywhere. Connectors, splitters, chewed or kinked cables. Crushing, corrosion, rubbing, rodent chews - anything.

Splitters are especially problematic. May look good but internally shot. Made very cheaply. Our local Comcast folks often come to the door with a splitter or two in hand. Do not even test the cabling. Swap a splitter or two and all is well.

Try unscewing all connected coax cables, blow out dust, clean the threads and reconnect.

Use the same process to examine your ethernet cables and connections. Swap out existing cables with known working cables.

Just do it all very methodically...

And do call Comcast. They can test things from their end and even reset the modem or modem/router sometimes.

May take a few calls to find the right person but keep trying and document each call.
