Need help with new CPU/MoBo selection

Hey guys, i recently just posted on here before about upgrading my computer. I was originally going to be kinda cheap and get a sufficient upgrade for my intel core 2 duo in exchange for an i5. However, i figure that if i want my pc to last longer with little upgrades that it'd probably be better in the long run to go with an i7. I have come up with a build that i think is as cheap while being a great upgrade as possible. In general, i just want a desktop that can run battlefield BC2 on high in multiplayer lol. Can anyone give me any feedback on this build?

CPU- Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz

MoBo- GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366

RAM- G.SKILL ECO Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600


I found these all on neweggs and it all came out to be $587.97. can anyone find a near identical build without much decrease performance wise any cheaper? Any help much appreciated =]

i7 is of course better, but the difference between i5-750 and i7-920 is minimal 99% of the time. Hence, i7-920 will also be outdated by the time i5-750 is outdated.

yea but ill need to buy a new mobo, cpu, ram, and a gpu which would be more money. right now i have a 8800gt with ddr2 RAM, which the card is outdated yes, but still a solid card. if i could get a good i5 that performs just as well as a lower end if not better i5 id be happy =]

noooo, i didnt buy anything yet lol. i said i have an 8800gt right now. but i have a core 2 duo processor which isnt performing very well. i want to upgrade my processor with the most performance for the best price. maybe i worded my response wrong, sorry =/

Don't you also have to get new MB, CPU and RAM by going with LGA1366 route?

I am so confused now....

If you do not intend on upgrading your 8800GT then that build is waayyy overkill and will nor provide much difference in that game at as to what settings you will be able to play at.
If you do plan to upgrade the GPU at some point, then that build is fine.

ok, maybe i did mess up things by saying what i said lol. this is what happens when you make a post at 1 in the morning >< so from scratch, my PC has 4 gigs of DDR2 ram, a 8800GT, and an intel core 2 duo @ 2.33GHz. i just bought battlefield bad company 2 and i played the game on high with almost no lag on single player. however when i went to play multiplayer i had to switch everything to low settings. in a nutshell, what would be my best route for be able to play on high settings in multiplayer?

ok cool, thank you so much. oh and one more kinda noobish question. once i install the new setup (...mobo, cpu, and ram) my computer will pretty much lose all the system information other than the few files on the hard drive correct? and will i also be able to re-use my copy of windows 7? or will have have to un-register or something so that i can re-activate it

1. Why would you need the system information from your old setup?

2. You will only lose the information on your OS partition after the upgrade unless you have only one partition or a complete drive format is given after the upgrade.

3. You will have to reinstall Windows 7 after the upgrade.

4. You can only activate your Windows 7 again if it is an non-OEM version!!!

i meant like programs and other things of that nature. and yes, i have an actual copy i bought from best buy of windows 7, i just didnt know whether i could use the same cd key again since once you register the product if it would only allow you to use it once. maybe im just being an idiot though and overthinking it lol. anyways, thank you for your help and putting up with my questions

There are two versions of Windows 7 in every edition. One is retail and the other is OEM.

Retail version allows multiple activations(but can only be used on ONE computer at a time), whereas, the OEM version can only be installed on the same PC.

ohhh ok, i get it now, nobody's ever explained that to me lol. thanks for clearing it up. so i guess all i gotta do is buy my new i5 CPU, mobo, and ram and im on my way =D im so pumped haha. now i see why you're a vet ;D
