Yes, the i7 6700/7700. Essentially, they are the same CPU. I think the 7700 has a 100mhz high clock speed. But in the real world, you wont notice a difference between the two CPUs.
I would look for a deal on a used 6700/7700. You will need to update the bios to run the 7700 though. But that is no problem as you already have a 6400.

8gb more RAM would also give a boost.

Do you have a SSD? Prices have gone way down and in 2019 every system should have an SSD. It wont make your fps better in most games, but it will make the entire PC experience much better. B

Yes I do have an SSD, plus just for clarification I assume you mean the i7 6700/7700 right?

If I would want a somewhat cheaper option what do you think would be the best fit? (thanks for all the advice so far)

That is the cheaper option. You could go with a 6600/7600, but you wont see a big performance jump. Other than that you are on a dead platform. Unfortunately Intel screwed that generation with their mobos. The 6th and 7th gen CPUs were basically the same CPUs and only work on 100 and 200 series mobos.

ah interesting so would you advise me to buy a new mobo aswell then? considering it might be better for the future?

thanks for the help ^^

would you also recommend me upgrading my current ram?

I would try and match your current RAM instead of having to buy a new kit. Mixing and matching RAM, even of the same model, does not always work. But it probably will work and is worth a shot. Intel CPUs have pretty good RAM compatibility and the speed really does not matter as Intel CPUs dont scale much with higher speeds.

But just to be careful, get the RAM from a vendor who takes returns just in case it does not work for you.
