My son is wanting computer parts for Christmas, he's big into gaming and I know nothing about computers, only how to use them, somewhat lol. His current computer is home built and has lasted him a long time. He is getting ready for college and is wanting something that's going to get him thru his college years. My budget is pretty tight, he did give me a list of what he wants. So I'm looking for opinions on his choices, I don't want to get him something and its not going to last so if someone would want to look these over and let me know what you think or offer other suggestions that would be wonderful. I need to stay pretty much in this price range though, cheaper would be great!! Thanks

Hi Susan :)

We can definitely help you out, and save you some money. More information is needed in order to give you the best advice however. Take a look at this post and then come back here and answer as many of the questions as you can. You may not understand all of the questions, and that's okay, just need as much detail as you can give.

In the meantime, I've gone ahead and compiled the parts you've picked out on PCpartpicker, which is a website that aggregates the prices on computer parts and shows you which store has the best price for a given component. It's not totally comprehensive and it misses things sometimes, but it's still tremendously helpful when planning a build. It's already found better prices on several of your component choices. :)

Now, I already have a number of suggestions for things I would change in this part list, but I'll wait until I have more information from you before I make any recommendations. Also, is he dead set on any of these part choices, or is pretty much everything up for review?

I'll be in and out for most of the day, but I'll check this thread again when I have time. :)

P.S. I notice you don't have any RAM picked out. Do you already have memory that you're planning to re-use? Same question applies to the operating system (windows).
