Need help with pc online

So i just sold my ps4 and ordered parts for a pc. Here's what i wanna know: no matter where I buy my game from, can i play online with my friends who have purchased from steam etc?
And does it work just like console where you send someone an invite and they just join your game?
Does it matter where I buy the game from?

Depending on where you purchase you may or may not get a steam key. If you end up on a different platform (steam, origin, gog) than your friends, then obviously you will not be able to invite them using features provided by the platform. In that case or if the game does not support "friend invites" provided by the platform you will have to use in-game features to join the same server. Also many multiplayer games on PC use dedicated servers hosted by community, so creating private server just for you and your friends requires a lot more effort.
