Need help with permission on external HD

My old computer died about a month or two ago, I recently got a new HD for the computer. I took out my old HD and decided to turn it into a external possibly if it wasnt damaged, i bought a usb to hook onto the HD and plugged it in, now it says I dont have permission to access those files, but I can still copy them to my new HD and view them, I dont want to have to copy every file over to see what it is, pictures mostly. Im pretty good with computers and all but after trying for a couple hours I cant seem to figure it out. So mostly I need help giving my new computer permission to access my old HD files. Thanks with give more info if needed.

When you are in "Computer" and the drive is listed right click on the drive and then go to properties.

Click on the "Security" Tab

Click on "Advanced"

Click on "Owner"

Click on "Edit"

Click on your User Name or on "Administrators" with an S not Administrator then check the box that says "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"

click ok. It will then copy those permission on over. Once that is one click OK again. You should now be back at the Properties window for the hard drive. At the top for Group or User names click on Edit. Click Add

Then in the box either type in your username or again administrators (Assuming your user is an administrator account) and then click ok.

Once it is done ok out of everything.

You should now have full access to everything. There might be a few things it denies you on but they should be folders that you don't need to access to copy off files.
