I know what to do. GRIP the standoff with pliers and unscrew it with screwdriver. But even as I do this, the standoff keeps spinning. What am I doing wrong here?
If the standoff is stuck to the motherboard tray, Usually pressing up brom the backside while you unscrew it is enough to get it to catch and then unscrew. Usually I use whatever coin is my pocket and press the flat side (heads/tails) to the screw with my thumb.
Is the board out of a case, with standoffs still connected? If not, rotate screws/standoffs until you can remove the board from the case, then you should be able to grip them properly with pliers.
Or you know maybe a useful suggestion instead of something that will do a bunch of damage to his case for no appreciable reason. But thanks for your input, time to move along.
If the standoff is stuck on the backside of the motherboard then I use a socket&wrench to hold it in place and then, if a screwdriver isn't enough to free it up, another socket or nut driver on the screwhead.
