So I'm in the process of building my new PC and this time around I want everything to look neat and whatnot. I have a Be Quite Silent Base 800 (windowed version). I'm using my old power supply in my new build, it's a Thermaltake 850w power supply, you can plug the power cables into it, but it has the motherboard power cables coming from the inside of the PSU so that can't be replace, not sure if mine is considered modular or not. Also this was from 5 years ago, not sure of the model right now, I'm not at home to check it.

Anyways, I wanted to route as many cables through the back as I could and now I'm running into problems, the other cables are slim so there's no issue with them, however the power cable for the sata drives are pretty fat, so when I put in the side panel I have some problems closing it and it's pushing against the side panel. Now I came across a post online on not to use sata power cables from a different brand than your PSU, with a whole bunch of replies agreeing with that.

So is it really true that it has to be the same brand because I don't even see Thermaltake selling sata power cables on their site. If there's some exception to it all, what are some cheaper slim sata power cables that can be plugged into the PSU because I'm seeing some extension type of cables, not really what I'm looking for. For example some

Also I'm not sure what these cable are called but it's the big one that plugs from the PSU to the motherboard and there's a smaller one that powers the CPU. It's a bit short and I can't route it through the back, so its going directly to the motherboard making the inside look ugly. Are there extensions for that (preferably slimmer ones), and do they have to be the same brand as well?

So to sum it up, do these cables have to be the same brand? Are there slimmer versions of these cables and extensions? Are there ones that you can bend them around more for better cable management in the back?

There are extensions/replacement cables available, e.g. IceModz.eu's, however, they are expensive - probably around the cost of a decent power supply. Personally, given that your unit is 5 years old, it'll probably be past its best (capacitor sag, etc), so you might just be better off getting a new PSU ...

By cables do you mean the modular cables for your PSU, or extension/adapter cables, or are you talking about sata data cables?
Yes you need the modular cable sepcifcally for your PSU as different PSUs have different pinouts.
No you don't need the same brand extension/adapter/data cable as your psu.

Looking at the case you should have decent amount of room for your cables.

Yeah I'm talking about the actual modular cables, and unfortunately there's not a lot of room with the sata power cable I have, they are pretty fat.

Ok so I'm looking at full modular PSU's now, does the same brand rule apply to that as well for the motherboard/sata power cables? Also I'm getting different numbers from every PSU calculator I'm using.

How many watts do I need for my PSU if I want to do 2 GTX 980's, right now I have one but I might SLI it in a few months from now. This is my build:

i7 Skylake 6700k
GIGABYTE GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 motherboard
3 7200 RPM HDD's
1 SSD
1 blur
1 GTX 980 (might do SLI)
USB 3.1 front panel
NZXT Hue led and LED controlls
