One upgrade that is rather standalone would be upgrading your ram, 4gb won't cut it for most games anymore and if you're wanting a work station more multi-tasking power is good. Coupled with that fact that DDR3 ram is dirt cheap now because of DDR4 popularity. You could go for a 8gb kit or even 16gb. That said most other upgrades besides a new graphics card require multiple components to be switched out. If you want to change the processor you'll most likely need to change the mother board as well - vis versa. Keeping all that in mind I would say although it's not technically cheaper it will serve you better in the long run to get a new computer or even better build one yourself (which most people would recommend). It's very easy to get a budget PC that handles quite well for around $550. I'm not sure what your budget is but if you can afford I'd invest in a new setup. Dumping money into a system that is out-dated all around seems counter intuitive.

According to sources on the internet while looking for your Dell Motherboard model no.018D1Y
- I found that it could be pushed to 4 x 240-pin DDR3 DIMM slots – Dual Channel DDR3 1333/1066 MHz non-ECC, un-buffered memory (Max 8GB)
- The Video PCIE slot is a 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16. which in itself should not be an issue because more recent v3.0 should be backwards compatible, but if a video card doesn't work on it, could be a bios or incompatibility.
- CPU supported on a LGA775 Die would be Support Intel Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual Core.
- Designed by Dell inc. 018D1Y to Support Operating Systems: Win 7/8, Vista/XP
- power supply that comes standard with the 500 series is 320w (important when picking a new video card)

Considering 8gb of DDR3 4x2gb will cost about 65$, say a GTX 1050TI/RX470 will run you in about 130$
those are basic upgrade you can do, now when it comes to upgrading the cpu (not that I was able to narrow exactly which dual core 2 quad it allowed yet,. but assuming best possible scenario a Q9560, that runs, used, 100-150$ easy.
a new cpu fan 30$ and your done... so total 65$+130$+150$ = 345$ no including taxes rebates etc.

you could upgrade the system to a brand new G4560+ Mobo +Ram + video card for ; 305$ and be in this millennium.
