hey guys im looking to upgrade my pc for my birthday i have 1000aud budget.

i play allot of gmod and the server i play on is pretty popular, when lots of people are on the server and lots of props are spawned my fps drops down to around 30-40 fps.

i do play other games like battlefield and assasins creed.

what i am asking for help is i have a budget and not sure what i should get.

specs:

gtx 1060 6gb
i5 8400
PRIME H310M-K
seasonic gold 700w
8gb ddr4 ram

Solution
AMD Ryzen 7 2700X with a ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming Motherboard
and add 16gb of 3200mhz. how does that sound? and just keep the 1060 for now and when i can upgrade to a rx5700

It doesn't make any sense to go from the 8400 to the R7 2700x really. It's more of a side grade than anything and the ONLY area you'll gain any performance in would be games that are REALLY able to leverage more than six threads to their advantage. Obviously there are some that can do that and the numbers are growing day by day, but the gains you might see, for those kinds of titles, probably aren't worth spending money on both a CPU and motherboard for.

Makes more sense to slap a low TDP i7-8700 in there along with 16GB of RAM...
What is your case model?

What have you tried in an effort to fix the problem?

What kind of quality settings are you looking for?

What resolution are you gaming at?

What is the exact model of your power supply and how long have you had it?

What is your Windows version? If Windows 10, what build version?

With multiplayer, many threads are good.
You now have 6.
Possible upgrades for your motherboard:
8 threads i7-9700 or 9700K
12 threads i7-8700K
16 threads i9-9900 or 9900k or 9900kf
You can't overclock the K suffix processors, but the boos t performance will still be there.
I don't know your aus prices.
I might also upgrade to 16gb.

I don't think putting an i9 or even those i7s on a 3+1 phase board is a good idea by any measure.

Hi If these are your current specs:

gtx 1060 6gb
i5 8400
PRIME H310M-K
seasonic gold 700w
8gb ddr4 ram

Then I would add a better GPU and more RAM and that's all! Save your money as you already have a good 6 core CPU in the 8400 but your RAM is low and the GPU is not that great. The 8400 is still a great CPU and matched to a better GPU will do moire than a good job...

My choice would be the GTX 2060 Super or the AMD RX 5700 (both are great choice) and double your RAM to 16gb by buying an addition 8GB stick so that you are running dual channel. RAM is cheap at the moment...It must be the same speed rating as the RAM you already have. This will make an immediate difference.

If those are not your current specs but what you are proposing, then I would look to Ryzen and the 2700/3600 + B450 motherboard as you have stated in your update...

Makes more sense to slap a low TDP i7-8700 in there along with 16GB of RAM and then save the remainder of your money, and add to it as you can or sell your GTX 1060, and move up to a higher end card like a 2060 Super or 2070. Or a 5700XT if you prefer. I don't care really about your brand preferences, but the 2700x isn't going to give you the change you are looking for. If you're going to go with AMD, then you should be looking at 3000 series Zen2 upgrades instead.
