Hello,

I am currently using an old athlon 4600 x2 on a

ASUS M2A-VM motherboard
http://ca.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2/M2AVM/

I would like to upgrade it to one of the newer phenom ii x4s but most of the ones it says it are compatible with are discontinued.

I was wondering if some of other AM3 phenoms such as the phenom II 960 black edition would be compatible with my motherboard.

Thanks for the help.

Thank you for the reply WR2. I have heard conflicting reports on the compatibility and its confusing me. Some of said that the only reason some of the phenom ii x4 won't work is because they are rated 125W+ which is above the 95 supported by the motherboard. Others have said that they were able to get unsupported processors to work on the board also. Could you explain to me why the processor would not work? It is AM3 and 95W which is the same as many of the listed supported processors.

-> Unless you can find a confirmation from someone who DID manage to get a different CPU running.

I can't confirm that other CPUs would work. But you might find trustworthy reports from people who actually did it.

How about visiting the Asus support forums and looking for CPU upgrade stories from other ASUS M2A-VM owners.

nope as it is there are no phenom 2x4 processors that will work with your mobo. you need to have an am3 or am3+ socket motherboard. you need to buy a new mobo, ull want a socket am3+ it works with all phenom2, athlon2, fx and the upcoming vishera processor that uses piledriver cores

RAM

You would need to buy those for $103 to use that CPU. Its a worthy upgrade on your current one. Those are the cheapest acceptable I could find there are more featured mobos out there for a little more $. The mobo supports core unlocking as that 960T has the possibility (not garuanteed) of unlocking to 6 cores (Phenom II 1600T or 1605T).

Its advisable to get an aftermarket cooler with that CPU too. You dont have to but if you want ot overclock it to 4GHZ you would need one.

Just so you can see, it supports up to 945.

Save your pennies, upgrade to new mobo, new ram and new CPU. Even with a second hand phenom in your mobo you're doing you and your hardware an injustice and will end up having to upgrade your mobo later on, in which case you will find your CPU wanting.

Upgrade all, or not at all dude. You will not regret it. The difference will be night and day.
