Stay away from the AMD E series APUs. They were considered weak even when they were new.

The above links to laptops using Intel's Bay Trail-M CPU (Atom series) are okay, they are better than the AMD E series APUs, but are generally considered weak as well. I would avoid the laptop in the last link because it only comes with 32GB of storage, but actual usable storage will be around 10GB because Windows uses the rest of the storage. The other two Bay Trail laptops are $250 / $300...

I recommend you purchase the following 15.6" Dell Inspiron laptop for $300 on Nov 27th. It comes with a core i3-4030u and the Intel HD 4400 graphics core. It is far more powerful than any budget laptop with the Bay Trail-M CPU especially when it comes to...

In terms of overall performance, because the 15.6" Dell Laptop is more powerful than any laptop with a Bay Trail-M CPU, it will generally usable for a longer period of time before you or your son feels that it is sluggish and would like to spend even more money to buy something newer.
