I'm having trouble finding something that will work with Linux:
- I have x1 and x16 PCIe slots, and some old PCI slots available
- I have 4 TB SATA-3 drives, with GPT partitions
- I use mdadm, and am not interested in RAID from the card.
- This is Linux only, no Windows present so it must be configurable without that.
- I can set the motherboard to AHCI mode, or IDE compatibility mode. I prefer AHCI, but will do whatever is needed.
- I've tried the HighPoint 640L. Twice. Oddly the motherboard see the drives on them, but Linux only saw them briefly, then they went away. Other reviews indicated this card has a spotty record.

My motherboard has 6 SATA ports, but 2 of them just stopped working. Possibly because I kept rearranging things and those locking cables put stress on the board and the connector pair. Shame on me, I guess, but now I need at least 2 more ports.

I'd like to hear a success story. I don't want to pay much over $100 for this.

I don't know if I understand you correctly but did you do GPT-partitions?
Heres some more info http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/4tb-drives-and-gpt-4175412537/

Are you looking for a Sata-card, expansion card? I can't help with that.

Another thing is with some motherboards, 2 Sata-slots can be configured to use IDE I think it is. Mainly used for CD/DVD drives. Check BIOS if you have that enabled.
