Need Monitor Advice - Console/PC Gaming & TV Watching

I'm about to pull the trigger on my new PC build, but looking for suggestions on a monitor. Currently I'm using an old 42inch 720p TV that is in dire needs of upgrading, but I think the shock of moving down to a small monitor may be too much. Does anyone have any larger monitor suggestions that might work for all of my watching needs? Willing to spend at least $500USD.

Since you need a TV, look for a tv with a 1080P(1920 x 1080) resolution.
The higher resolution will be a nice upgrade.
There are many, and they are relatively inexpensive.
