[SOLVED] Need NAS compatible with multiple USB external hard drives?

Hello,

I apologize if this is a dumb question, but Google did not provide a definitive answer:

Is there a pre-built NAS out there that effectively supports the usage of several USB external hard drives?

I have about $400 worth of 4TB+ external hard drives (5 in total) that I want to connect to a dedicated NAS, but I am unsure which NAS device will allow me to connect the drives to it.

I currently use my desktop to share the drives across the network, but would like to get a dedicated (and pre-built NAS) to share the drives instead since Windows is not the best OS for NAS duty.

What make and model drives?

Are they encased in some form of USB to SATA enclosures with their own independent power supplies?

My suggestion is to get a older but functional desktop, install FreeNAS, then install the drives directly into the case. You may already have a suitable desktop.

Thank you for the quick reply. Two of the drives are the WD My Passport, one is the WD Elements, rest are Toshiba Canvio Basics, so I am guessing all are considered encased with internal power supplies since they connect via USB and that's the only connection.

I don't have another desktop sadly, so mostly interested in just buying an affordable ready-to-go solution. Or at least one that has a relatively small footprint and requires minimal setup time.

There are multiple product reviews to be found: i.e., "Best product".....

Read a few such reviews/guides and establish your specific requirements.

Pick two or three candidate NAS products.

Visit the applicable Manufacturer's website. Read the specs, User Guide/Manuals, FAQs, and Forums. Look for what is said as well as what is not said.

Find a NAS that meets your requirements and budget.

In the meantime other people may post specific suggestions and ideas.
